According to the box in Bing's post, if you upgrade from Win7 to Win8, you should be able to retain your apps. Whether or not every app will still work in Win8 is a different issue.

Problem is that MS see's 8.1 as a different OS from 8.0. So, if you try to upgrade from Win7 to Win8.1, you won't be able to keep any apps.

My Computer

You should be able to keep everything if you upgrade from Win 7 to Win 8 then upgrade from Win 8 to Win 8.1.

There is software out there than runs on Win 7 but not Win 8 but I personally have not encountered any.

Retired in 2015 after working in the tech industry for 41 years. First 10 years as a Technician, the rest as a programmer/software engineer. After 1 year of retirement, I was bored so went back to work as a Robotic Process Automation Consultant. Retired for 3rd (and final) time in 2019.
The only software I encountered that worked in Win7 but not in Win8 was the older, XPDM Intel video drivers. MS disabled XPDM support in Win8, so those drivers don't work anymore -- but they were used in a LOT of Intel machines, especially laptops.

As has already been explained in the posts BEFORE yours:

Upgrading from Win7 to Win8 -- get to keep apps.

Upgrading from Win7 to Win8.1 -- do NOT get to keep apps.

Don't know how you backed everything up, but if you used an imaging program (like Macrium Reflect, or Acronis), then you have the ability to quickly and completely restore your working system in only a few minutes.

Just be sure that you have what is needed to boot into the restore environment before you take the plunge. In the case of MR, this means having created a boot CD/USB using their tool.

I just tried to install windows 8 but it says it cannot install on a drive with mbr. it says it has to be GPT to install windows 8. I thought I only need gpt on 3tb+ hard drives
