Win 8.1 to 10

In anticipation of the update or upgrade to Win 10, would it be a good idea to create a fresh image of Win 8.1 so less clutter is brought along with 8.1?

If there is a chance to install custom and clean this would not be necessary but, if it does not offer that opportunity, I was thinking of having a nice fresh 8.1 image with all Windows updates on it.
When it came time to upgrade/update to 10, and there is no custom option available, I would move with a clean OS instead of one full of clutter.

Then once I have a clean 10, I could image right away.
Any help appreciated

That's what my strategy will be. I have full Macrium Reflect image of original W8 and also freshly updated to 8.1 image, all safely stored on separate media TWICE. When time comes it will be installed on brand new SSD. Nothing like nice clean, fresh system to work with. Those images are updated and will be with all the updates they had.

I have both pcs imaged with macrium for 7,8 and 8.1.
The only one I was lazy about is the lap with 8.1.
It is imaged but not a fresh one.
Yes, it is very important to have Windows fully updated before you do anything so all works as it should.
I am glad for you and now I have the lap to do.
You are the only person who has agreed with about this tact and I have asked a lot. They seem to feel there will be custom to install cleanly but I think it will be an update not an upgrade with that feature. Better safe than sorry.
Of course I could always wait to see if there is a custom/clean option before I go to all the trouble of doing the laptop. ;)

It doesn't take long to image a drive - so what you got to lose? a little time..

And if a clean install is offered - so what your out a little time..

Win 8.1 came out as an upgrade - before they offered a clean install option later..

We still don't know which way W10 will be distributed but in my mind upgrading from clean, updated image is just as good as installing clean.

I agree. I misspoke. I have the desktop all set but although the laptop has almost all images of a clean install and images for 7and 8 I did not get around to 8.1 yet.
Not sure If I will wait or not. Reinstalling is a pain and imaging is easy but one has to be done before the other, unfortunately
I run 8.1 on the laptop but the image was not done after a clean install -it was a mistake but an image in trouble is better than none at all.
