Hi, Please tell me if I am in the wrong Place or Wrong Forum.

I have a New Asus X552LA with Win 8.1 64 Bit
I also have a Spare New HDD

I have Activated etc the Win 8.1
I would like to Remove the Win 8.1 HDD completely and save it until I want to use Win 8

On the New HDD, I would like to Install Win 7 and use until I want to use the Win8.1 Original Disk, e.g. 1 years time
Then I want (Hope) I could just put the Win 8.1 HDD back into the Computer, Update and continue using Win8.1

and use the Win7 HDD as an external HDD in an enclosure

Expected Problem, Changing the BIOS Settings firstly from Win 8.1 to work the Win 7 HDD
and then back again to use the Win 8.1

I would be so grateful for Advice on What changes to the BIOS to make for the Win 7 and Win 8.1 Respectively.
If it is a crackpot idea, please tell me that too !

I realise that more information is probably Necessary, but I don't know what, but will respond asap with whatever asked for

Many Thanks
Cafola

Thanks Cliff S
I have been searching and deliberating on this all day
I will do that tomorrow and Post back
Thanks again

By the way, for €45 it seemed a good idea and easy, but is it sensible ?

I've been using windows 8.1 a couple of months now since I bought a desktop and still have my laptop set to dual boot win 7 and ubuntu. I like change & I use each os in a different way, some days I can't decide which one to use. If you want to do it this way it's sensible or it would probably be easier to just learn to use a virtual machine and put windows 7 in that. But if you're planning to use just 7 for a longer time what your planning is the better choice so long you have product keys for both versions.

Hi again
I have just been looking in MY Bios (Win 8.1 Hdd) to make sure I can find everything before I do it.
I don't want to screw it up and find I have lost my Win8.1 Licence - I only have the Hard Disk with it on

In my BIOS under Key Management, at the Top, I have this
Delete All Secure Boot Variables
OR
Save All Secure Boot Variables
Store content of each Secure Boot Variable (Data
formated as EFI_SIGNATURE_LIST) to a file with
Matching Name on selected file system's root
folder
(all 4 of them show INSTALLED beside them)
Should I Save them?
If so, is there something I should know?

Again, Thanks for the Help - and Thanks whs for the Link

Hi
One Last Worry
When I replace the Win8 (Original - untouched) HDD
I will have to change the BIOS Settings back to suit Win8.1

WILL IT RECOGNISE MY LICENCE automatically ???

I realise I only have one crack at this
so IF I DO IT CORRECTLY I have wasted my time

Thanks

If the computer is a newer model(last couple years) and came with windows 8 or above your activation key is embedded in your BIOS/UEFI firmware. It'll be recognized. Only when you use a different version from windows must you give a key code.
