Solved Back to Basics - How to use a small SSD and large HDD

Hi

I have an Asus S56C (25GB SSD & 500GB HDD) which came with Win8 and I used it without any problems or knowledge of how it was set up. I then decided to do a complete re-install.

After much faffing around, I found out how to install Win 8.1 on the SSD. With all the programs automatically installing on the SSD I rapidly ran out of space. More research and I eventually found out how to re-locate the User files and used AppMove (Funduc Software Home - Windows shareware and freeware) to move the program files.

The SSD is still 70% full.

My question is : how are the two drives (SSD & HDD) supposed to be used?

I have spent hours searching the internet and found mods to the Registry and other fixes, all of which sound dubious. I am sure there is a simple way to effectively use the speed of the SSD and capacity of the HDD, I just need someone to explain, in simple terms, how to do this.

Please help!

That SSD was likely setup as a cache drive. Windows would have been installed to the 500 GB HD. There will be a utility you install to make it work that way. I think your going to have to start over. 25 GB is too small. Moving everything over to the other drive the way you have just negates any benefits of using it.

Thanks alphanumeric, your reply solves the problem and makes a lot of sense to me, as I know know what the SSD is for. Do you know the name of a caching utility I can install, or do I need an Asus specific product.

All the best

It should be listed in the downloads for your model on the ASUS site. It may be under drivers or utilities. If not, check your owners manual, its likely listed in there somewhere as a feature.
