Solved which updates does Windows 8.1 Update 1 ISO image include?

I have used Windows 8.1 Update 1 ISO image (Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help) for a fresh reinstall of windows 8.1.

I had thought that since this .iso is recent, it would also include all the updates till date, and I won't need to download-install any updates.

but when I checked the windows update, after the reinstall, it is showing I need to install 54 updates.

is this possible?
do I really need all these updates mentioned?
how do I decide which ones are necessary?

thank you for your help

regards

thank you, brink.

I don't have msdn subscription.

I understand that the .iso I used does not have latest updates.

so... which all updates it DOES have, if any? till what time/date?
and... are the 54 updates that windows update shows as needed... really needed? or are there some which could be redundant (because of latter updates included in this .iso?

actually, my concern/question is - out of this 54 updates that show up (some look old), which one are really required by me, considering I have this .iso installed 8.1?

thank you.

Every second Tuesday of each month ("patch Tuesday"), Microsoft releases updates for Windows. Unfortunately, ISO files are not updated as often to include these newer updates.

You'll need to install all the updates since they are all important to keep Windows patched and updated.

I knew about patch Tuesday... and that is the reason I was surprised how can there be so many updates needed, if the .iso was recently released.

I am a bit worried because in the past I have experienced unnecessary updates have caused problems.

I just checked the installed updates. it shows date of 24sept. which means the .iso is of around that date.
yet, the suggested updates are also from 12th august. (there is one also from 2013, but that I can understand... could be specific to my laptop configuration)

I hope I don't sound like a stubborn fool. :)
I seem like that because I have been trying to have a good working OS since last 3 months, and I have reinstalled the OS atleast 5 times in that period. with every time ending up some or the other problem.

I don't blame you. The last few Patch Tuesdays had issues with some of the updates.

To be safe, I'd say wait at least a week before installing any new updates to see how they do out in the wild first. This will give time for any new patches to be release if issues were found with them.

When installing updates, I find that it's best to only install the ones selected by default first, restart the computer if required, and repeat until no more updates are available or you have to select to install them.

If Windows update says you need them, then they aren't installed on your machine, or in your ISO file.

I install all updates, but I usually wait a few weeks at work. At home, I have it set to automatically do them.

While I do recommend being cautious, I don't recommend not installing the updates. Trying to read up on each one and determine if it's absolutely necessary seems like a huge waste of time and effort. Plus, testing at MS is always done at specific levels, meaning they are more likely to discover an issue if you are up to date on all of your patches. You may indeed run into something strange if some are updated, some are not, and that may not be reproduced by MS our other.community members.

dear pparks1,

could you clarify this a bit more.
I understood, you said to wait for a few weeks before installing the updates.
what I am not understanding is, how will that help me to decide? and decide what?

am I missing something here?

would you suggest I simply hit the install button in my WU?

thank you

When installing updates, I find that it's best to only install the ones selected by default first, restart the computer if required, and repeat until no more updates are available or you have to select to install them.

dear brink,
when you say "selected by default", do you mean all those updates that are 'ticked' in the WU?
if so, I found all the 53 updates are 'marked'. only the 5 optional ones have blank squares.

does that mean I install all? do I simply hit the install button? and the process will take care of itself (including restarts)?
and the process will take care of the sequence too? if the sequence of which updates need to be installed first, matters?

thank you

biren

Biren,

Yep, the ones that are checked by default first. After those are all installed, then you could manually check the others to install. The installation sequence will all be taking care of using this method.

thanks a lot brink.
I think I am ready to go. :)
just a last question.

since this is a huge download (almost 700 mb), should I start this process at a time (night) so that it runs uninterrupted? would any interruptions in between cause problems?

thank you for your guidance and help, brink.

It's up to you really.

If you don't have unlimited data and your ISP has a certain time period where you can download without using your monthly data bandwidth, then that would be a good time to download it in.

When I installed W 8.1 from that same ISO I have about 50 updates with the 9/24/2014 date that came with the ISO. I now have 154 total.

Check out this link for Optional Update KB3000850 before installing it.

http://www.eightforums.com/windows-8-news/57241-optional-update-kb3000850.html

I posted this in post#4 as it takes a while to download and install and looks like it has stopped.

I am doing my Laptop now. The download goes to 4% then pauses and Windows Modules Installer Worker kicks in high gear and shows lots of Disk activity. After a while it calms down and the download resumes. Running on my Laptop with a SSD it took 10mins to resume the download.Download pauses at 90% and Service Host and System kick in high gear with Disk activity. After another 3 min the install starts. Another 7 min and ready to reboot.
