I have a Windows 7 laptop partioned with C as 196GB (31.8 free) and Windows 8 of 23.4 GB with 23.3 free.
I downloaded the Windows 8 trial and the install seemed to go well up to the last step when I received an install error. Is there a special way I have to install the trial?

No special way needed, but since you've received an error, you can do something else instead that will be error free.

All you need to do is to copy the files out of install.wim to the Windows 8 partition, using imagex on your Windows 7. (I would re-format Windows 8 partition first to NTFS quick.)

Look over this link and understand it. At first glance, it seems much more difficult than it is in practice. It is actually very, very easy:

While using the elevated command prompt to get to imagex.exe folder, just use the chdir /d command. For example:

chdir /d C:\Programs Files\Example Folder

(Where imagex.exe is installed to ^^^)

When done copying, use EasyBCD to add Windows 8 to the boot menu (while you are in 7.)

Hi.

Can you tell us a little more about the installation error you received please. I assume you were attempting to install Windows 8 on a separate partition - D:?

You have to check if your download has correct MD5 or CRC (checksum). I assume you have downloaded Windows 8 ISO.
Then when you burn the ISO to DVD use slow write speed - not the highest available to avoid write errors.

It is best if you transfer Windows 8 install ISO to USB using Microsoft Store Online - Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool. The tool is free.

I would install Windows 8 to VHD as it is still in beta - not even RC. So you would not use a partition - a VHD (virtual hard disk) is just a file on disk.

In response to how I did it: I downloaded the windows 8 file from the Microsoft site, burnt the iso on a DVD, ran the program (it did not give me a choice of which partition to put it even though I had wanted to put it into a separate partition I created for it), it ran completely through... shut down the computer and restarted several times, said it was configuring... at the final step it said that Windows 8 could not be completed at which point it brought the computer back to Windows 7.
I would like it to be installed as a dual boot and not replace Windows 7.
