So i will be updating my motherboard hopefully in a few days, i know i can take steps to were i will not have to re do my operating system which is win 8.1, as i have seen people do it. But my question if it works like i want it to and all goes well, how would i reactivate win 8.1 if it ask me to as mine was the update from MS that was free at the time, and thus i did not get a product key for it at all it just installed, will i be able to use my win 8 pro product key to reactivate?. I have seen people do the motherboard with out re-installing win 8 and all goes very well.

Hello Tony,

If this is an OEM Windows 8 key, then you are out of luck since it is permanently tied to the original motherboard.

If this is a retail Windows 8 key, then you could use the ISO file from Option One in the tutorial below to create an installation USB to install Windows 8.1 and activate with your Windows 8 key.

Maybe it's the fickle finger of fate, being kind to an old man, but......

Here's my story:
I hava a little 2.5", 160GB hard drive that I had set up on my Desktop PC, which uses an AMD Athlon X2,5200+, 64 bit CPU chip. After doing the full install of Windows 8.1, 32 bit, and setup on the desktop, I pulled the little drive and shelved it for future use.

Skip forward to last week.

I was given an HP laptop PC, with a blown Hitachi hard drive.
Not being able to recover the drive, to use it again, I basically trashed it.

Then I took the little drive with Windows 8.1 on it and installed it in the HP Laptop.
Marvel of Marvels...... it booted right up and after installing a few hardware drivers it was on-line and running like a champ. Activation did not change.

The Clinker:
Both computers are using an AMD Athlon cpu. Windows 8.1 evidently thought it was still on my desktop PC, but with some different video, LAN and sound cards. It automatically installed compatible drivers for all the hardware. I had considered just trashing the little laptop, but now it's running so good...... I think I'll keep it.

I've actually seen this phenomenon before, where a Hard Drive moved from one AMD PC worked perfectly on a different PC with an AMD cpu, after installing some new drivers.

I don't know if this works on PC's with Intel cpu's. I try not to use PC's with Intel cpu's.

So, as long as you're going from one motherboard, with one brand of cpu, to another motherboard with the same brand of cpu, you might not have to reinstall or even re-activate.

Good luck with that!

Most likely, it'll only accept a 8.1 key.

The 8 Pro key will only work to activate a current 8 Pro installation.

You don't, but you could download the ISO file from Option One in the tutorial I posted above that will allow you to do a clean install of 8.1 Pro and be able to activate with an 8 Pro key.

I'm not sure that will work when you place the drive on a new motherboard, but it wouldn't hurt to try to avoid a full clean install. Be sure to back up anything that you do not want to lose first though.

You will always be able to activate a retail key on any PC. It's just that you may have to activate by phone if that key has been activated to many times in short time frame, or has been activated on another PC before removing for the new PC.

This may or may not help.

I used my Factory recovery disks to restore my PC to the original OEM version of Windows 8.
{From 8.1.1 Pro WMC}

I installed My paid version of Macrium Reflect & inserted my USB drive & restored it back to 8.1.1 WMC.
It activated automatically.

I did not have to use my ProPack key or my OEM key.
The system found them, I guess, & with my Microsoft account everything went well.

If you want to know your keys run this VBS script.
It shows OEM & installed keys.

View attachment ShowKey v1.3.vbs

It looks like this---

The main point to this post is I didn't have to type in a Product Key at any stage of the process. :)

This may or may not help.

I used my Factory recovery disks to restore my PC to the original OEM version of Windows 8.
{From 8.1.1 Pro WMC}

The main point to this post is I didn't have to type in a Product Key at any stage of the process. :)

You Sir are a life saver this gave me my current installed key I will now be able to reactivate win 8.1 pro with media center i forgot i did that, and be good to if it ask me to do so. i did not have a key for OEM in system that's good as i figured that was gone when i did everything else before.
