ability to upgrade to RC when its released then to final version.

Hey guys, im having troubles with windows 7 firewalls, i think i had a virus which i succesfully removed but my firewall is screwed up. Tried to research alot to fix it up without much luck, so im thinking of upgrading to windows 8 preview...

I'm curious whether I can uninstall (been told that you create a restore disk during installation) can anyone confirm this????

but also, whether when the RC is released in May whether its possible we can upgrade to that without doing a clean installation....

even better whether we can upgrade to the windows 8 final release from the RC or developer preview????

I know with windows 7, you had to do a clean instalation...

if anyone knows anything about this please comment.

    Hello, welcome.

Windows 7 had the ability to upgrade from previous versions to RTM. It just wasn't able by default. You had to edit a file and was actually officially supported by MS. My Win7 install is the same one since beta 7000, upgraded with each leak/release to date. As for upgrading the Consumer Preview to RC, that will be able to without doing anything special at all.

Since you've had malware, I can only recommend using Killdisk to low-level format the drive and then install the operating system of choice after.

    Good luck.

    Thanks for responding...

Do you know whether this will be the same with windows 8 however.

will i be able to download the developer preview now, and then just upgrade to the RC when its released around may then to the gold copy?

There's no guarantees of anything, as no official policy has been set yet. You'll be able to do anything though.

If you install 8 now, I would choose Consumer Preview build 8250.

    You're welcome.

One thing that will be different is the product keys. They're available for free now because this is a pre-release version. But when the retail version comes out, you'll actually have to BUY it to get a working product key.

My own feeling is that it will be better to clean-install the retail version than to upgrade from the RC. I've been doing this since the Vista beta days, and have found that clean installs of the retail versions tend to work out better in the long run, than upgrades from pre-release versions.
