Win partition shifting leaving users & programs as it is

I have the current partition layout :
driveinfo.PNG

Here, I want to move Windows 8 from the 360GB disk to the 1TB disk. A few complications :

I have an image in the form of windows system image. I want to put it in some partition on the 1TB disk, whose contents I will distribute to other partitions.

I want to keep the programs separate because of ease of imaging, and perhaps user profiles too.

A fairly non-trivial task... Hoping for some hand-holding through the process :)

Background : the 3.5" 360GB disk is connected through an eSATA+USB casing to an eSATA port on the motherboard. It is implemented using a JMB363 SATA controller. Windows 8 didn't play well with it no matter what I tried. Check : PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_ERROR 0x000000b6 Solved - Page 5 - Windows 7 Help Forums , the entire thread contains the sordid saga.

Hi there. I'm not the savviest here so far as your technical issue. Use of and navigation of W8, yes, but not technically in what you're trying to accomplish. I will do my best to help you. At least keep your thread alive until someone that does know comes along. Another thing is I'm on my Lumia, so I'm somewhat restricted.

What comes to mind is the EULA. As you probably know, it's different with the next OS and may be more restrictive. I will research, but moving an OS to another HD or partition is liken to migrating it to another machine. I'll research that.

For the moment it sounds like you may be better off starting anew, but we'll see. I realize that may be a PITA. Hang in there I or someone will be back.

I see you have 8.1 Pro. Need to know how you purchased it.

I must say > I'm not knocking it, but that's quite an unusual disk and partition setup you have there.

Thanks for the interest shown :)

I bought the 40$ upgrade to Windows 8. Free update to 8.1. Reinstalled a couple of times to get an "optimal" setup.

Is it that unusual? I guess people with multiple disks will try to keep their OSes separate, and Win 8 + Win 7 dual boots must be common.

No, not unusual to dual boot for I'm DBing 8.1 with 10 Tech Preview, but I see you like to keep things on separate partitions. It's just that I've never seen that many.

By looking up Windows 8 Pro here: License Terms it will lead to a PDF of the EULA. Within the license terms is this:

What about upgrading the software? The software covered by this agreement is an upgrade to your existing operating system software, so the upgrade replaces the original software that you are upgrading. You do not retain any rights to the original software after you have upgraded and you may not continue to use it or transfer it in any way. This agreement governs your rights to use the upgrade software and replaces the agreement for the software from which you upgraded. After you complete your upgrade, additional software will be required to playback or record certain types of media, including DVDs.

Can I transfer the software to another computer or user? You may transfer the software to another computer that belongs to you. You may also transfer the software (together with the license) to a computer owned by someone else if a) you are the first licensed user of the software and b) the new user agrees to the terms of this agreement. To make that transfer, you must transfer the original media, the certificate of authenticity, the product key and the proof of purchase directly to that other person, without retaining any copies of the software. You may use the backup copy we allow you to make or the media that the software came on to transfer the software. Anytime you transfer the software to a new computer, you must remove the software from the prior computer. You may not transfer the software to share licenses between computers. You may transfer Get Genuine Windows software, Pro Pack or Media Center Pack software only together with the licensed computer.

FYI: They have certain things underlined in the paragraphs of which I omitted, but I did my own underlining to stress the points below.

Don't know, but I'm assuming you used your Windows 7 copy to upgrade to Windows 8. If so, you can no longer use your copy of Windows 7, otherwise you are in violation of the EULA. So far as transferring 7, you'll have to look that up, but you can transfer 8 as it specifies.

If all that is true and you want to continue using Windows 7, then I'd advise to purchase a full copy of 8.1 to install.

Well yeah, I was trigger happy in dividing up space into "neat" chunks. In fact this arrangement is actually a consolidated one, having about ~3 partitions less than before :) Also I thought I could keep the OS separate and image it, but having this problem : http://www.eightforums.com/performa...-image-backup-compatible-imaging-program.html

My windows 7 was originally upgraded from XP, after upgrading I'm using an MSDN key from my friend.

A drive is a drive and a partition is a partition. Don't know enough about, nor do I know of any mirroring software that mirrors just one partition. Perhaps someone else does.

I still don't know what you upgraded to 8 from. From a Windows 7?

OK, so getting back to your original problem; You want to move 8 to your 1TB drive's partition. Like I stated, I do not know of any mirroring software that mirrors just one partition. If there is none, then a fresh install is in order, which I realize is a PITA with an upgrade copy of 8. That means 7 to 8 to 8.1. Regardless, however, to stay legal within the EULA; Moving it to another drive's partition any which way is liken to installing to another machine. That's legal, but I would think it needs to be activated, which registers it there.

Even if it's possible to move via mirroring, I would think it needs to be registered there. Not sure what the consequences if not being registered, for MS has gotten quite sophisticated with activation/registration. I would imagine it wouldn't update for sure and probably stop working after a period of time.

Sometimes I find myself trying to save a buck, but find myself living in a false economy. Sometimes it's better to buy the full copy to do with it whatever at will.
