So the other day I was using xp and clearing up memory and decided to wipe my partition for windows 8 consumer preview( I was dual-booting it with xp) since I don't use it. I shut down my computer afterwards. Now when I boot it up it shows me the fish icon and says "preparing automatic repair". Then it says "diagnosing your PC", then "attempting repairs" endlessly. How do I get around this and straight to the boot menu? Or just some way to make my computer usable again?

So you know, you deleted the boot files necessary to boot anything at all, when you've deleted the 8 partition. Your 8 partiton was setup as what's known as the "System" partiton.

There are simple commands to run before you do that again, if you need to know for the future.

This should help now:

But I don't have the xp CD. I got an Acer aspire one net book and xp was pre installed. Is there anyway to bypass the windows 8 boot menu and switch to xp boot menu? Without actually booting into the computer either since i obviously cant do that. Thanks for your time btw.

You're welcome. I'm sure there are other ways but can't say offhand quickly.

Hopefully someone else will be able to say. There are quite a few here who would know.

Have you tried running the Acer eRecovery Management utilities, If I remember you have to press Alt+F10 during boot. These should give you access to the hidden recovery partition for XP.

Yeah, I have an Aspire One here too (my fathers) - it came with 7 preinstalled.

It did have the recovery partition from the store, but I deleted it. So ya, it should be there to use.

Still, it's easy to find XP discs online.

I tried recovery management. But it said it was going to restore the xp partition. Would that allow me to boot into xp again? or would it just go right back into the attempting repairs thing? Basically would it restore my entire hard drive or just the xp partition?

It should restore XP to factory defaults. If that doesn't work, you'll have to use a third-party bootdisk, either create your own with WinPE or maybe download one from AllBootDisks.com Once you've booted from the disk you can attempt to fix the MBR. Try the XP restore first.
