Windows 8 license transfer a new Windows 8.1 computer. -> link

NOTE: The activation robot asks you how many PCs you have installed Windows on. The correct answer is number 1.

    I hope not.

Isn't the Widows 8 $40 key a retail key, and is transferable?

But your OEM Windows 7 is not transferable, you will need a originally OS to use with Widows 8 $40 key a UPGRADE key.

I may just have to try and get it to work with my current install, but that will probably be a pia. If I can, though, I should be able to do a refresh or clean install.
I just did that a few days ago because of a motherboard upgrade....... Oem upgrade version also. Windows will spend 10 or so min fixing the drivers and you have to call in to activate again. I didn't even have to talk to customer service rep..... the automated system work fine without a hitch...... hopefully it will work the same for you

    Hi there

With Windows 10 you've got a different ballgame now -- you CAN upgrade W7 to Windows 10 using the Technical preview (use the NON enterprise version for a NON enterprise version of W7). It's FREE has a start menu and by all accounts is getting really good feedback from the W10 Forum with few complaints.

This will work until April 2015 when the full upgrade should be available. As it's 100% FREE and designed to be almost more W7 than W7 itself I'd go this route now.

Don't spend money unless you have to !!!!. Simply download the ISO and upgrade. Details on the W10 Forum.

I'd have recommended W8.1 before but with the release of the Technical preview of W10 and the stability and compatibility so far reported for it - it's a whole new ballgame now.
