I am brand new to Windows 8.1 so please bear with me. I set myself up as System Administrator during installation. When I try to load the software from CD for a 5510 HP printer I get an error saying I cannot do it because I am not a System Administrator. I have verified that my profile show me with that designation. Any help is appreciated.

Hi Jack, welcome to the Eight Forums.

When the first user account is created when Windows is installed or a pre-installed Windows booted first time, it is always an administrator account. This far all is as it should, if your account is what you created when installing and you have not changed the account type, you are an administrator.

Windows also has a so called built-in administrator account, by default hidden. This account has even more privileges than a normal administrator account.

Your case puzzles me, usually there should be no issues in installing applications, programs and hardware using the normal administrator account. I myself an HP fan I have used and installed a lot of various HP printers, scanners and All-in-One devices, always without a problem.

Let's start with a screenshot of the error message you are getting, it would be good to see the full message. See these short tutorials to see how to make a screenshot and how to attach it to your post:

Does this happen automatically, after inserting the CD and the autoplay feature trying to start installation, or do you you launch an installer from CD?

Hi Kari...I get the msg after launching the install. This is sequence of events after inserting CD.

1. Install or run pgm msg. I chose this.
2. User account control msg. Do you want to allow pgm from unknown publisher to make changes to this computer? I chose yes.
3. msg says welcome to install wizard for HP all in one. I chose next.
4. msg says install options. typical (recommended) or minimum. I chose typical.

I then get the Sys Admin req error.

Thanks!

OK.

Try this: right click the installer program, a context menu opens. Select Run as administrator, see what happens and come back to tell us.

Are you logged in with a Standard Account or an Administrative Account:
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/5518-user-account-type-change-windows-8-a.html
I might have read the OP's original post a bit creatively but as I understood it, he's talking about the account created when Windows was installed. This account is of course always an administrator account.

True, but I look at the unobvious that a Local account was created after the fact which could cause the problem.

I just tried that Kari and the same msg came back. When I received this laptop a couple days ago I entered the info requested for an account user. I was never asked for an option to be a system administrator. It appears it was assigned to me.

I downloaded the HP install wizard. It "hangs" in "retrieving device details". I waited a long time but it still stays in that mode. I also found out I cannot download any software because it does not recognize me as the system administrator. Right clicking and selecting the 'run as system administrator' does not help. Your help is appreciated.

"Retrieving device details" most probably means the installer is searching for the printer. Make sure that before launching the installer your printer is turned on and connected to your PC, or in case of a network printer it has a valid IP and is connected to the same network than the PC in which you are installing it.

Fixed!

I now have a working printer after downloading the drivers from the HP site with the printer turned on. Thanks for the help!
