Linux uses a different format for HDDs. I suggest downloading the free GPARTED and use your burning program to create the bootable CD from the .iso file, boot to it and delete the parition/s to give the HDD a clean slate for Windows. My Linux Mint has built in support for burning.

If you repartition and format disk during installation, it doesn't matter which OS you had on it before.

Quote from this post: UEFI Boot Mode (installing using the GPT partition style) and Legacy BIOS Boot Mode (installing using the MBR partition style). -> link

Normally, you should be able to delete all the partitions on the Where do you want to install Windows? screen.

Note: But if you cannot delete all the partitions on the Where do you want to install Windows? screen.

    - Boot the computer using the Windows 7/8/10 installation media.
    - On the first screen, press SHIFT+F10 to bring up the command prompt.
    - Run the following commands at the command prompt.

list disk (this will give you a listing of the disks on your system)
select disk # (select the disk you want to clean, for example select disk 0)
clean (running the clean command will delete all partitions on the disk)

Even if you are going to use the GPT (GUID Partition Table), you do not need to run the convert gpt command, since you are not creating the partitions at a command prompt.

    - Close the command prompt window and continue your Windows installation as usual.

i have been able to boot windows 8 to an extent when it starts the install it gives me the message "A media driver your computer needs is missing. This could be a DVD, USB or Hard disk driver. If you have a CD, DVD, or USB flash drive with the driver on it, please inset it now. Note: If the installation media for Windows is in the DVD drive or on a USB drive you can safely remove it for this step" I have tried 2 DVDs as well as a dedicated hard drive and this has always happened.

Windows 8 vs ubuntu 12.10? Ubuntu's drive accesss speeds are faster but Windows 8 boot time is. Is this because of Ubuntu EXT drive format? and does this mean ubuntu will be faster while initialized?
