I have windows 8 installed on a separate partition I made with the recommended size of 20gb. leaving me with 5gb free. is there any way to increase the partition size without reformatting/wiping anything? I went into computer management and the extend volume option is grayed while the shrink volume option isn't.

If the free space is not contiguous with the partition you're trying to extend, the option will be unavailable. If this is the case, you should be able to use one of the free third-party utilities to rearrange the partitions. Take a look at these:

Partition Wizard
EASEUS Partition Manager
Paragon Partition Manager Free Edition

There are probably others as well as live disks, such as GParted

thank you! I gave partition wizard a try and successfully shrunk my main partition by five gb. when I resize my windows 8 partition though (still using partition wizard) there's something like 16mb left over from the now-unallocated 5gb. is there any way to avoid that?

That's quite common. I wouldn't worry about it. 16 MB is never going to make you or break you.

thanks, it worked just fine. I used computer management to extend my biggest volume to use the 16mb again

Hi,

IIRC those 16Mb are used by the third party partitioning program (I recall PMagic doing something like that as well) to shove things around or something like that.
Sort of a minimum space required to work if you like.

You guys correct me if I'm wrong though. Been awhile since I used stuff like that.

Cheers, ;)

I like Easus Partition Magic. It has always worked, and saved my rear end when I accidently converted my main disk into a simple disk. Aomei's version told me it could do it, but forced me to buy the full version in order to fix it.
