What happens when the released version...

An Air Force base near you at one time or another
...gets loaded over the preview version? Will it be upgradeable without destroying or overwriting files, folders, settings, and installed programs?

I've never tried a preview version of an OS and then bought the released version.

Does anyone know?

It's really going to depend on whether they follow the same process they did with Windows 7. In that case, it was entirely possible to upgrade from the RC to the full release, but it wasn't as straight forward as it might have been. In all honesty, you'll probably save yourself a lot of grief if you do a clean install, upgrading Operating Systems at the best of times, is something to be avoided where possible.
