Hi Guys

I've been using the tutorial to install win8 on a second hd through win7 using a usb drive and I can only get as far as open the source file > double click "setup.exe" and it asks me to allow the is program to make changes and I agree and then it tells me "something went wrong to to install go to windows 8 click Setup.exe on the installation media "(But does this not wipe my win7)?????

cheers

Hi there, welcome.

If you are installing Windows 8 from within Windows 7, there is no reason to have it on a USB stick at all. Just mount the .iso that you downloaded. Windows can do so natively but I like to use PowerISO for that.

For example, if you mounted it as F: then run F:\sources\setup.exe

It is a VERY good idea to remove the USB stick from the machine if you do that.

Edit reason: To add this important information from the site's tutorial and fix my post - If you run the setup file in the root directory instead of the one in the sources folder, then you will be upgrading Windows 7 or Vista to Windows 8 instead of dual booting with Windows 8 and will lose Windows 7 or Vista.

If installing onto a separate hard drive wouldn't it be better to boot from Win 8 and setup from there? This would avoid problems with dual booting confusion which always seems to occur. Then use F8 when booting to choose which drive and thus which OS. When doing this in the past with earlier versions, I'd physically unplug the drive containing the OS I wanted to keep to ensure I didn't install to the wrong one!

Yes thatmanbrian, that's all correct in what you're saying to make life simpler and to avoid potential issues.

But on the other hand, many users feel intimidated by changing bios or trying to find out how to boot from USB on their particular machines. Sometimes even, USB boot devices are not easily found and are shown as HDDs. A novice would be like "what the heck?"

Gman, you're not Gurkha Man from another forum by any chance?

Anyway, I have had problems in the past with dual-booting so thought my idea would be simpler. But there's many ways to skin a cat!

To avoid potential future boot sector problems I've always installed using either a multi-boot PE environment or virtual machine. I'm currently running Windows 8, Ubuntu & XP the free VmWare virtual machine from within Windows 7 without any major issues.

I notice you're running Win 8 32bit pcbilbo? I thought it was only going to be released as 64bit? did MS get cold feet?

heh heh, nah - This is the only computer forum I am on and when I joined, I picked the user name fresh...meaning I am only GMan here and no place else too.

MS never claimed that Win 8 will only be 64 bit. If you heard or read that somewhere, it was likely a rumor started and repeated. Sort of like how Rebecca Black is a parody of herself.

There are still a few bits of software out there - lets start again - there are 16-bit Windows programs that will still run on Windows 8 32-bit, but almost certainly not on Windows 8 64-bit, and some bits of hardware that cannot handle 64-bit instructions and therefore cannot be driven in a stable way.

I am talking less about modems or sound cards, more like factory machinery and essential production facilities that cannot be replaced cheaply.

Personally, I think that the next version (Windows 9?) will only support 64-bit hardware, and that Windows Embedded will handle legacy functions in enterprises. Still, I can't tell the difference between them since I only have machines with modest amounts of RAM, and I can't type very fast.:D

I first went 64 bit with Win 7 and initially had problems with getting drivers and so on that would work. But that quickly sorted itself and now unless you use legacy stuff for a good reason, I don't think we need 32bit anymore. Even my ancient scanner runs OK. The only exception is a few of my Photoshop plug-ins which haven't been updated as their developer is long gone. But there are modern equivalents availble.

Hi. I need windows 8 'setup.exe' file (only 8kb) please mail me on imranshabbir999@gmail.com
After downloading a 'windows 8 ISO' from a torrent and burning it on a DVD, it failed to boot from it.
My Bit Defender antivirus found that the 'setup.exe' was infected with a trojan and deleted it, the rest of installation files are okay and I don't want to download entire windows 8 installation just for missing 8 kb setup file. Please help.
