3GB hardware reserved

I installed Windows 8 on a USB stick (with the help of WAIK). When I run that, I see nearly 3GB of hardware reserved RAM - total RAM is 6GB. When I run Windows 7 on the same system from my SSD, there are only a few MBs as hardware reserved.

Does anybody have an idea why the USB stick installed Win 8 would make such a big hardware reservation.

I don't know enough about Windows 8 to answer conclusively but it sounds like you need to enable memory remapping in your BIOS. I have seen this happen in Windows 7. I think it has to do with your motherboard. I wish I could be more helpful. It's a place to start.

I have built 40-50 systems. I have 3 desktops and just got a new laptop.
Thanks for the answer. But I don't think that this is the problem. On the same machine I run Win7 and there Hardware Reserved is only 26MB.

Have you already tried disabling the "Maximum Memory" option in MSCONFIG / Boot tab / Advanced ? I have read that has been a problem. It's sounds like yours is more complex but you might give it a try.

That's a good idea. Will try that. But first I am waiting for my new fast stick because running it from this slow USB2 stick is just too slow.

I was just thinking this might be a driver issue also. Motherboard, Graphics card drivers might not be working completely with Windows 8. It's early. You will fix this. I wonder how many others with the same board and/or graphics are seeing this. If I learn anything I will let you know.

It must be something specific to the installation on the USB stick. That installation is protable between many different PCs. It probably works with generic drivers. But e.g. Grapics is quite good.

Earlier I had Win8 in double boot on this system. Then I did not have this problem. But double booting was a pain. Booting into my Win7 was 10 times as long as normal.

It is not a big deal. That system has 6GB of RAM so there is plenty left for Win8. I was just wondering what that would do on e.g. a system with only 2GB of RAM. But I do not have such a system at this location for testing it. When I am back in Germany in May I can check that. There I have an old HP laptop with 2GB of RAM.
