Hi, I Had a problem With my display on my advent tacto, meaning I had to use an external monitor.
Recently I had to do a factory reset and now the setup doesnt show on the external monitor. Meaning I cannot access anything on my laptop, Im not sure how to solve this as the screen shows nothing and the monitor shows up to the setup and turns blank.

Any suggestions or resolutions?

Thanks in advance :) -Seb

Sounds like the built-in monitor is gone. Just so I understand correctly, the external monitor is working correctly when you turn on the machine (ie., when it boots, and during POST), but when it gets to Windows Setup, the monitor goes out? Did you try the keyboard hotkeys to switch from the builtin monitor to an external one (when you get to the setup screen?) Although this probably won't work, the keyboard hotkeys could be low-level for your manufacturer, so it's worth a try...but, by the sounds of it, it seems like Windows is trying to switch to the built-in monitor when it loads the setup module.

Check your BIOS for something that allows you to turn off the internal monitor. If not, you could create an answer file, which is simply a a little text file that you include on the installation disk/partition that allows the OS to be installed unattended, without any input from you, this will get you into Windows, where you will be able to use the hotkeys to switch your primary display to the external monitor.

Let me know if you need help with that.

EDIT: Actually, we might be able to include a command in the answer file that in fact switches the primary display immediately to an external one - I'll have to look into that. Check your BIOS first, and try the hotkeys as well. Also, you have a Windows disk I'm assuming correct?

Hi thanks for the help, You are correct about the internal screen completely broken. I will look into the BIOS stuff a bit later on today.

And no, no windows disk however I might be able to get hold of one

Ok, I'm pretty certain we can get Windows installed on your machine without the internal monitor; we will simply prepare an answer file beforehand for an unattended install to get the OS up and running - which will put you in an environment that will allow you to make your external monitor the primary.

Okay, sounds good. Looked through BIOS and didn't find any option to set an external monitor as the primary monitor, so thats out of the question.

So what would i need to do to create an answer file to sort this?

You are going to need a Windows disk, or image (iso). Do you have access to someone else's computer at all? You are going to need to copy an xml file (which I will give you a link to), onto a flash drive.

Is the disk you have a genuine Windows Disk? Or will you be creating a disk image through download, etc (iso) on someone else's computer? The reason I ask is because you will want to put the answer file on the installation image if you will be creating one, if you are simply using an original windows disk, then we will have to copy the answer file onto a flash drive (Disc, etc), and will have to copy it onto your HD before we do the install.
