Alright, so after restarting my Toshiba Satellite L50A16H Laptop (Windows 8.1) it gave me a blue recovery screen,

it stated:
The Boot Configuration Data file is missing some required information.
File: \BCD
Error Code: 0xc0000034

Unfortunatly I haven't made a backup or recovery file to boot my computer from so I'm stuck with the issue of finding a windows 8 iso file that matches my system, i tried getting the windows 8 iso from microsofts website but it asks for a product key before it lets you download the file, the problem is that my product key is built into the laptop and Toshiba has not provided me with the key on a sticker on the bottom or through any other method. apparently its built into the BIOS. i have a 16gb USB stick that i can boot from. using a key finder is obviously not an option because i cant start up the laptop. I was also wondering if i manage to find a windows 8 iso file to boot from, will my toshiba laptop automatically fill in the product key for windows 8 as i dont have it.

I'd like to see if i can solve this problem from home before i send the laptop back to a company.

regards,

Henk.

You receive the following error message:

The Boot Configuration Data file is missing some required information.
File:\BCD
Error code: 0xc0000034

And you can't refresh or reset.

Refresh your PC: "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again."

Reset your PC: "Unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing."

How do you repair the problem.

- Boot the computer using the Windows 7/8 installation media.
- On the first screen, press SHIFT+F10 to bring up command prompt.

-or-

- Boot the computer using the Windows 8 recovery USB flash drive.
- select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.

Run the following commands at the command prompt.

diskpart
list volume NOTE: Note the volume letter where the Windows OS is installed.
exit

bcdboot X:\windows NOTE: Replace "X" with the volume letter of the Windows OS partition.

For example, bcdboot c:\windows or bcdboot d:\windows (see screenshots below).

If the drive letter is incorrect, you will receive the following error message: "Failure when attempting to copy boot files."

alright, so i got my USB and i put a windows 8.1 64-bit Pro ISO file on it however its not loading it up, i selected the kingston USB stick as the first Bootable device in the bios, nothing is happening. do u need to change the format of the USB?

EDIT:
I've downloaded Rufus to properly set up my USB to be ready to boot from, however when i select the iso image i wish to use it gives me this message: This version of Rufus only supports bootable ISOs based on bootmgr/WinPE, isolinux or EFI. This ISO doesn't appear to use either...

Please note that the ISO file was torrented and is not a legit copy, any recommendations on where to get a windows 7/8/8.1 iso that will work for Rufus?

Have you contacted Toshiba for a recovery DVD Set?

I would check with everyone I know for a DVD some manufacture do ship these, otherwise you'll have to find someone that has purchased Win 8.1 your Version Core or Pro.
Then Goggle for Generic Product Key's to start your installation hopefully your key will pick up otherwise you'll have to find a way to extract your key The Generic key will get you into window 1 time to allow you to type in your code. you may or may not have time to extract your key with a program.
These are some older keys I have no Idea if they still work or not.

Trying to avoid contacting the manufacture of your unit? That should have been your first move.

Just to make sure we are on the same page, for a normal USB drive, you need to mount the .iso and copy over the files. I haven't used Rufus, so not sure how it works..

If the drive is formatted in Fat32 and active, it should try to boot. There is the tutorial on how to make a bootable flash drive, so I assume you followed it or some other tutorial...

@genet, you don't really need to put a drive letter on a system partition for that to work.
