Windows 8 was probably installed with UEFI GPT disk type and I don't think it supports Windows XP installation.

MBR is the standard partitioning scheme that's been used on hard disks since the PC first came out. It supports 4 primary partitions per hard drive, and a maximum partition size of 2TB.

GPT disks are new, and are readable only by Windows Server 2003 SP1, Windows Vista (all versions), Windows 7 & 8/8.1 and Windows XP x64 Edition (as data disk only). The GPT disk itself can support a volume up to 2^64 blocks in length. (For 512-byte blocks, this is 9.44 ZB - zettabytes. 1 ZB is 1 billion terabytes). It can also support theoretically unlimited partitions.

Windows restricts these limits further to 256 TB for a single partition (NTFS limit), and 128 partitions.

EFI: What is UEFI? - Windows Help

Here's how to find out whether your HD is used with GPT style or MBR style.

Installing XP on modern hardware can be a serious challenge and may ultimately prove futile. The problems are more serious with a laptop. In addition to disk incompatibility most manufacturers no longer create drivers for XP.

If you must run XP it is best to do it in a virtual machine.

If you want to Dual Boot Windows versions, older version has to be installed first. Since system came with windows 8 preinstalled. You can't install XP. If you need to install XP you will lose windows 8 and you have to change partition to MBR and then install windows 8. You might not find drivers for XP. Installing XP in virtual machine is the best option.

Install Oracle VirtualBox then run XP as a client under it. Runs well and has not hardware problems. I like to play with Operating Systems so I have the following. I can boot any of them in a window on my Win 8 Pro X64 Desktop.

VirtualBox is giving error while installing windows 8.1

Do you mean you are getting an error while installing VirtualBox on Windows 8.1? If so, what is the error.
Where did you download it from? Should be here: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

You want this one: VirtualBox 4.3.14 for Windows hosts x86/amd64

Once you have it downloaded, right click on the downloaded file and select Run as Administrator, see if that helps.
