Hello, I am having a hard time upgrading from windows 8 to 8.1, I have tried installing through the store, installing using the files downloaded by the store (copied them before they were deleted) and they all give me an error. The errors are as follows:

installer using key: This key does not work with this version of windows 8 (using Professional 64-bit, tried 8 and 8.1 key but neither work).
Installer using ei.cfg file: Setup failed to authenticate the product key (or similar, it is set to professional so this should not be an issue).
Store: just says setup failed.

The first time I tried updating, the installer froze and did not complete so I had to re-start, could this have something to do with the issue I am experiencing? My specs are as follows:

Windows 8 Professional 64-bit
2TB HDD
16GB DDR3 RAM
Nvidia Geforce GT545 with 3GB VRAM
Realtek AC97 onboard audio
Intel core I7 3.2ghz quad-core multi-thread processor

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Before attemtp to update to Windows 8.1, I suggest:
  1. Turn off any Anti Virus software
  2. Run Windows Updates and keep checking for updates until Windows comes back with there's no more updates available.
  3. From the elevated command prompt, run: dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
  4. then run: sfc /scannow
  5. Try to update again.

Thanks for the suggestions, however none of the above fixed the issue. I am thinking of re-installing windows 8 from the disc in order to see if that fixes the issue.

There may be a file named srttrail.txt in the Windows\system32\logfiles\srt folder that might provide some info concerning the situation.

Edit: What system are you using that has AC97 audio?

Sorry, thought it was AC97 since I have other Realtek stuff in my machine. Turns out I have an onboard IDT High Definition Audio card. also, the srttrail.txt output has the following:
