hi everyone

I have just upgraded to windows 8.1.
When I had windows 8 installed and I wanted to re-install I had the acer management system built in so that I could
re-install the system, I don't seem to have this facility in windows 8.1, so if I have a problem now how do I
re-install windows 8.
I do have a recovery programme that I made on a usb stick, will this reinstall windows 8.

regards calmat

Probably (you gave no details) but you would loose everything - you can't downgrade.

Why not use Macrium to copy your system now - Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download so you can restore to that if something goes wrong.

You can also make a custom refresh point using this tutorial http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/3610-refresh-windows-8-create-use-custom-recovery-image.html as a second option incase you want to refresh to 8.1. This will keep all your files (as of the restore date) and all of your programs (as of today). A very useful facility I think.

Hope this helps,

Adam

If you have an OEM PC that came with Windows 8 preinstalled and you updated to Windows 8.1, then when you refresh or reset Windows, it will reinstall Windows 8 from hard drive recovery partition (recovery image location) or from the recovery USB flash drive. Afterwards, you will need to update to Windows 8.1 via the Store again.

Doesn't the store upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1 break the factory recovery/reset function? I believe I saw it posted in another thread, you get prompted to insert your install media or something?

That is a problem on some computers, but not all computers (if you have an OEM PC that came with Windows 8 preinstalled and you updated to Windows 8.1).

Note the following text: Go to the Windows Store to reinstall Windows 8.1 and your apps.

If you don't have an OEM PC that came with Windows 8 preinstalled and you updated Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, then when you refresh or reset Windows, it will reinstall Windows 8.1, but only if you have Windows 8.1 USB/DVD installation media.

Note: You must insert Windows 8.1 USB/DVD installation media. See this link: How to download Windows 8.1 installation media.

If you don't insert any installation media or if you insert Windows 8 USB/DVD installation media, then you receive the following error message (see screenshot below).

Fair enough, thanks for that info. I'm not sure I'll even be able to keep it all straight but thanks anyway. ;)
