Cannot extend Win8 partition

Hey all,

Today I deleted my Win7 partition, because Win8 works so well for me that I need more disk space. So I wanted to extend my Win8 partition, but the option is grayed out in disk management.

What do I need to do?

-Also, am I free to delete the system reserved bit, the 100mb partition? It was a part of Win7, right?

Hi Robin,

That explains why you like the metro UI.

To answer the question:

The files you need to boot are on the 100mb partition.

So, unless you want to recreate them elsewhere - you can't delete the 100mb.

If you want to extend your win8 partition ( to the left in your screenie) - you will need a 3rd party partitioning program.

There is free version of Partition Wizard with a lot of features - there is also a free boot disc.

Partition Wizard

It will be capable of doing that - unfortunately, it does not use nt6 alignment.

That is not such a big issue on a regular HD- so you can use PW if you like.

( Partition Wizard also has a rather strange bug - that shouldn't bother you as you haven't got any logical drives ).

Thanks! Thought Win8 didn't use a separate partition for that anymore. Glad I didn't delete it. :p

Try using other Disk Management software like EASEUS Partition Master.
Used this and it worked well. Has native Win8 support!

Yes, I am quite fond of Easeus - I have a copy of the Pro version they gave me.

Easeus doesn't do nt6 alignment either.

Perhaps they will introduce it later.

I think I have asked them about it already.

If you can be bothered hunting through Easeus support forum - I posted instructions to make winpe boot media for the free Easeus partition master.

Of cause you can not extend your C partition by using the built-in Disk Management, extend partition requires continuous unallocated space behind the partition.
You could try many free partition tools which are well compatible with 64 bit, for Windows 8 CP, I found partition master and Aomei Partition Assistant could do you a favor. :) you can take a try!
P.S. There is an activity held by Aomei, you could join it:
