    If you feel something improved you might want to compare the before and after BCD listing. Maybe you will see what was causing it.

    You also might want to run the bcdedit command while you are booted into the VHD to see what shows then. But I have no experience with a VHD boot.

    The Bootrec /Rebuildbcd command will only show installs that are not already listed in the BCD Store....

    And dir /a will show the hidden files...

    OK, this is interesting. I'd copied the files onto my main C: partition. Z: is the VHD that's been attached. Running the command rebuildbcd, I get the following output:

    Z:\>c:\bootrec /rebuildbcd
    Scanning all disks for Windows installations.Please wait, since this may take a while...
    Successfully scanned Windows installations.
    Total identified Windows installations: 1
    [1] Z:\Windows
    Add installation to boot list? Yes(Y)/No(N)/All(A):y
    The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

    So now, even though Z:'s already in the boot list, it's re-detected, and yet the update does fail! Wow...what gives?
