My laptop came preinstalled with windows 8 and now I am upgrading to windows 8.1 through the windows store. Is there any way that I can save the windows 8.1 setup file for future use. I can't download the iso from MSDN as my windows 8 was preinstalled.

See here for obtaining the latest 8.1 (with update 1) Install file relative to your edition and architecture... NB the resultant Install.esd file still has to be inserted into a Windows 8 ISO file by overwriting the existing install.wim/esd file therein....

Thanks for the reply. But I can't find any file with .esd extension. Instead the hidden $Windows.~BT folder in C/ drive has some folders(boot, DUDownload, NewOS...) and some files including a setup file.

Install.esd should be in the sources folder... more info here....

Ok, I got the install.esd file. Can you please give me a step by step guide to create a DVD with this install.esd file or with the files inside $Windows.~BT folder so that I can upgrade my windows 8 later if needed.I really need the DVD because I have a slow internet connection(3.1Mbps). And please bear with me. I don't know much about these things. Thanks.

If you have the Windows 8 ISO you will need the boot.wim from a Windows 8.1 ISO as well

Open the ISO with eg. UltraISO

Replace the files in the ISO with those you downloaded.
If using Windows 8 ISO, replace the boot.wim in the sources folder as well.
Save as a new ISO.

OK.. You gotta create a new UDF Image file in UltraISO.

Copy the files you downloaded - without the unnecessary stuff...as explained in the link I posted previously.

You will need to replace boot.wim as explained above...I'm not sure if I'm allowed to share mine...:(

In the Boot folder that you have downloaded there should be a etfsboot.com file - copy this and rename it to etfsboot.bin (UltraISO does not recognise MS-DOS files as bootable)

To make the ISO bootable you need to select the Bootable menu and then the sub-menu Load Boot file..

Navigate to the etfsboot.bin file and select it (NB! NOT the bootfix.bin file)

Save the ISO.

Right now I am unable to even upgrade my windows 8 to 8.1 It simply freezes at "applying changes" stage and I have to restart the laptop. I'll get back when the update is complete. Anyway thanks for now.
