Solved Installation won't let me install on the Drive of my choice

Moron question of the day:

I have a 2nd drive that I partitioned and created a new drive to install Win 8. It is about 35Gb in size, but when I chose Custom install to select the drive, I'm getting a message that says "Windows can not be installed on this hard drive system. This partition contains one or more dynamic volumes that are not supported for installation."

So can someone translate that into terms that I can understand, so I know what I need to do?

2nd drive is Western Digital 300GB SATA-II 3GB/X, 10,000 RPM, 16MB Cache

Hello Greg,

While in Windows 7, could you post back with a screenshot of your Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc) screen showing all of this HDD's layout.

It sounds like when you partitioned the 2nd HDD (disk), you may have also converted the disk to be dynamic by mistake.

Here is a screen shot what I have at the moment, and maybe this is where you can guide me, I took my D Drive and shrunk it in size, and you'll see an un-allocated portion around 35Gb. When I posted this originally, I had taken the un-allocated space and made a simple drive, and called it F Drive. As you can see, I've gone back a 2nd time but haven't done anything with the un-allocated space, yet.

You mentioned that I may have converted the drive to be dynamic, but if so, I'm not sure how I did it.

Take a look and let me know what you think my next steps are.

Yep, when you shrunk D, you were asked if you wanted to convert to a dynamic disk. You should have said no.


What is the 39MB partition on Disk 0 for?

Do you have anything that you can backup what is on Disk 0 that you do not want to lose?

I don't recall getting the prompt on the dynamic disk message. let me go back and look at it again. The 39Mb partition, not sure what that is. Everything that is on disk 0 has already been backed up.

You would just need to convert Disk 0 back to a "basic" disk. Depending on if you need anyting on Disk 0 or not, you can use one othe options in the tutorial below to do so. Afterwards, setup Disk 0 to how you like with partitions again, then you should be able to install Windows 8 on it. :)
