hi guys,

wanted to upgrade Windows 8 Developer Preview to Consumer Preview, so i choose the road to install via setup, directly from MS since i want to keep my second partition alive and only the K partition (where Dev Preview is located on should be used).

Getting: Windows 8 Consumer Preview installation has failed, no code or anything else

Since i previously downloaded the ISO file and burned it to a USB stick, i choose to give it another try with the stick.

Both times after hitting install and at 28%, the message keeps coming in, so i had to abort.

Before installing i checked on the MS site for compability of my Revo 3 X2 drive and that is ok.

The only 2 issues i have where:

Windows essentials
i-tunes

Could it be Consumer Preview looks for the C: partition?

What i fear is that i will have to disonnect the Foremay with the C: partition on, boot from the USB and install over Windows 8 D.P.
Meaning reinstalling all other programs as well.

Any ideas?

thanks

Jeff

PS

My Win 7 x64 is on my first Foremay SSD as C:partition
2d Foremay is D:
OCZ Enyo is E:

Win8 D.P is K
O is Ofiice and on the Revo 3 X2.

First of all, could you post a screenshot of your current hard drive layout? You can find such a layout in Disk Management.

Secondly, it is not recommended that you use Windows 8 as your main Operating System as it is still in testing. Until the final build is released, you should install (if you haven't already) Windows 7 or another stable OS for use as your main OS.

Finally, it is always recommended that a clean install is used when installing test builds of any OS. I too lost many of the programs I'd installed on Windows 8 Developer Preview when I installed the Consumer Preview but it will help remove any bugs left over from the previous build. To do this you will have to choose a Custom Installation and install Windows 8 CP over the partition that Windows 8 DP is on.

Hi JaidynM,

well no, since i found on the net, that whatever installation you choose, only an upgrade is happening if you already have Win8 DP on your system.

Above this, i just want an upgrade, do not see any reason why this cannot be done.

here is the screenshot.

As i already stated, Win7 is on my Foremay drive, because in the time the Revo 3 X2 was not recognised by Win 8 X64 (now it is).

So Win7 contains the bootloader.

And no i am on WIn8 as primary machine since installation, will not change that either.

Bu thanks for the info

Sorry for the late reply.

Could you burn the ISO file onto a disc (not a USB)? Use that and select Custom upgrade settings rather than Express.

well, as i thought, when installig Win8 CP via my Foremay Win7 install, installation works, BUT no option was given too choose where to install, no option was given too choose "Custom Upgrade". I only could type in the activation code.

So now Win8 CP is on my Foremay drive instead of on my Revodrive.

Furthermore my Excel 2010 pro x64 does not work.....

the start button is ennoying (but others said this already). You do not easily find Control Panel shutdown, etc, etc......

So until this is solved by MS, i stick to the better option Developer Preview

Am i the only one?

Jeff

So i am back on Win8 DP

I don't think you are. It's could just be something to deter people from using upgrade install on test builds. Or maybe they just haven't thought of it yet. Either way, if it doesn't work you'd probably be better of sticking with W8 DP.

I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help... :(
