Solved Can I expect problems loading 8.1 with an 8 Product Code?

I am sorry if this has been asked and answered before. I did a search and read the tales of woe on the subject. Mostly they were a bit old, datewise. Anyway, here goes.

I have a W7 laptop and desktop. I bought 2 X Windows 8 Pro packages. I updated my laptop to Windows 8 Pro 64bit, all perfect, no problems. :) Never updated the desktop.

Many months later, yesterday in fact, I ordered a new desktop. The retailer is loading Windows 8.1 Pro for me on the new desktop and I gave him the Product Key from the second package.

Will he have any problems loading 8.1 Pro on my new system with my 8 Pro Product Key?

Is there a proven method to load 8.1 with an 8 key? If so could someone please point me at it?

I am asking in preparation, in case the retailer has problems so I can point him in the right direction.

I am hoping, with the time passed, that my question has been answered by Microsoft :p

Thanks in anticipation

Not so much MS, however the installer should know by now and have the generic product key to install Win 8.1 pro and activate using your win 8 pro product Key hopefully they will clean install the 8.1 pro rather than upgrade a win 8 pro!!!

My installer seemed reluctant to install 8.1 at all :( and would probably use the "too hard" excuse :sarc:

I did ask him to load RAID as part of the exercise as I use RAID 1 mirrors (another thread)

I wouldn't be surprised if he avoids the whole exercise and just loads 8 :p :(

Any other ideas/suggestions? :sleepy:

Not trying to be flippant but if that's truly the case I would look for a new tech.

Well, I was half right anyway :(

He (the installer) claims to have tried to install 8.1 with my product key but, that it was an "Upgrade" key and, the activation refused the key.

I don't know how hard the installer tried or whether he gave up too easily as I still don't know what to expect :(

Can you load 8.1 on a "New" system with an 8 "Upgrade" key?

The 2 Windows 8 Pro packs I bought seem to be "Upgrade only" :(

Does this sound reasonable? In all the reading I have done this concept didn't present itself!

I am picking up, what I assume, will be a blank desktop in an hour and then MY adventure will begin.

I will follow various threads from this excellent forum and try to get, first, 8.1 to load.

Failing that I will try to load 8 then update to 8.1. Failing THAT I will try Windows 7 then update to 8 then update to 8.1 :(

At this point I hasten to add that I have legal (bought and paid for) keys for all the Windows 7's and 8's I am using or attempting to use. (except 8.1!???? but that is free????)

The whole "adventure" frightens me as I will try to use/setup RAID and EUFI....

I would welcome any encouragement from members of this forum but, I suspect, a couple of hours from now my "adventure" starts and it will be too soon to get any encouragement :(

People around me are just waking up and people further away are getting ready to go to sleep :D

Yes, I've done it a few times.

I downloaded the iso for 8.1, installed using the generic key which can be found on this site then changed key and activated.

I picked up my new desktop and it had Windows 8 (not 8.1) installed. Entered my code/key and off it went.

It appears to have RAID (well IRST anyway) loaded, I don't know if by intent or accident? I don't know how UEFI stands? The BIOS is UEFI but I don't know how Windows stands with UEFI? I tried to create a UEFI BOOT USB but had some problems :(

I'll have a play, try to create a 4Tb mirror. See if I can port a mirror from my old system etc.

Maybe time to put the thread to sleep?

Thanks for all the replies... :D
