Windows 8.1 Install / Hard Drive Problems

Hi all, I am having a bit of a problem and need some help diagnosing what the cause might be.

I am running the latest version of Windows 8.1. The previous installation was acting a bit sluggish, to say the least. The computer would take forever to load, if it would even load at all. Many times it would get stuck on the windows logo, just looping forever. If I reset the PC then sometimes I could get it to load. Even when it did, it would take forever to boot to the desktop and programs would freeze constantly, though eventually they would resume. After running every type of test (Anti-Virus, Malware, Rootkit, and even a chkdsk), and coming up empty I decided to just try a re-install.

The install seemed to load fine/normally but at the disk selection screen it took a good long while to format the drive. And now I am stuck at the Installing Windows > Getting files ready for installation(0%). And it is staying stuck there.

Any ideas on what the problem could possibly be? What would be the logical process for diagnosing here? I should mention that even though I ran a chkdsk beforehand, I cannot say with %100 certainty that I read everything correctly. The reason that I mention that is because my #1 culprit would seem to be the HDD (the OS HDD, as it has two - a 150GB for OS and 1TB for storage). That is only an educated guess though and not based on any definitive evidence.

Thanks in advance for any help. Truly appreciate.

[Edit] After well over a half hour, if not an hour, the Getting files ready for install (0%) went to (1%). So it is proceeding, i.e. not stuck, but this still signifies a serious problem - does it not?

Thank you, I'll start there and post back what I find out.

Also though, any ideas on what else this might be? Could faulty RAM also be causing this? MOBO....CPU?

Well, the Quick Test came up empty but the full test detected and solved Error Code 0223. I just need to attempt a reinstall and see if it worked and that was the only problem.

I will come back and mark solved once everything is up and running, many thanks for the info and help!

Well, it looks like I spoke to soon. It is acting the exact same way when trying to install Windows.

Any ideas for diagnosing? I will run the diagnose tool again but if it finds the same problem, what does that mean exactly? Does this repeating problem help pinpoint some other faulty hardware?

I would replace the HDD.

Yeah, that is what it seems to be. I installed Windows to the other hard drive and it installed normally and everything seems to be working fine. I take this to mean that it has to be the other HDD since all the other hardware seems to be working fine with this new install.

Windows still reads the other HDD though and I can write files to it. Does this indicate something more along the lines of just a bad sector, since it still has at least some functionality?
