Update to 8.1 via MS store/ Leaves OEM Mach w/out recovery

Been a while since I needed to come here for questions and help.
Anyway just trying to figure out MS Idea to remove refresh/restore/reset
options (blunder) in 8.1 update at & and or around 12/2012
"right after warranty end for laptop.

Was wanting to refresh my PC(do not have install media/ nor created back USB/ISO(my Bad)
and came across this issue. By running windows repair located no restore points, nor size to
system restore(& recovery turned Off) in system protection, left system protection to default(4.56GB) cache for sys restore.

Is there a way to restore this function? as also stated here that the partition change in disk management/

I would just like the option to reset/refresh and or restore if needed in the future, and suggestions on this

Microsoft didn't remove the options "refresh/restore/reset"...........they just don't work without some missing files. Let's just hope the issue gets fixed with the April release of 8.1 Update 1.

We may need to keep the Reset and Refresh processes separate for clarity. And since true 8.1 systems are coming online, I suppose we also need to reference just the 8 to 8.1 updated systems.

You should be able to Reset your system, but it would be back to a Windows 8 configuration using the factory image in the large Recovery partition. I don't think having the 8.1 install files would make a difference here.

A Windows 8.1 Refresh is not an option, if you don't have the 8.1 install files, unless you have created a CustomRefreshImage when your system was working normally.

I have not done any restores, but I am running a 250 GB hard drive and the setting for my restore points is 5%. Maybe you could increase the available space to allow your restore points to build up.

The information states Enabled to Partitio6
issue is in reference to not being able load any partion as I stated.

Not been removed, just will not use the Windows 8 install.wim on Recovery Partition.


I would recommend you making the OEM manufacturer's Recovery DVD's or USB drive.

You can order the Microsoft official OEM Recovery disks from the OEM manufacturer's website.

Are you saying you cannot boot your system? The winload.efi file is used but it is not related to the Repair options. If that file is actually corrupt it will not be usable to boot, and I have seen several instances of this error message, but I do not know for sure what they had to do to repair it.

You might try running a Chkdsk to see if it will clean up any corruption.

The reagentc report looks normal so the Repair options should be available, although they may not be able to repair a corrupted file. You did not compress the partition or use some other process on the C: partition, did you?

No I have not used any other process.just upgraded to 8.1, & was just going to refresh/ possibly reset
but can not. System is booting and in good working order. Just was wanting to have the option to do a reset/ or refresh if needed.

At the moment trying to create recovery disks. At first purchase of laptop recovery disk creation was failing could not find path specified, hoping not to get same error this go around.
(appreciated of all the help so far )

will check in if disks were created.

Hello,

Well run recovery Media creator from Toshiba, and created the 3 DVD's required (Successful)
for the recovery Disks. But will not create on another Toshiba (As That Toshiba was able to refresh).
Might just have to wait until the win 8.1 is installed to create recovery Media, that is how it worked on mine.
or could be a whole other error in the program of Toshiba recovery creator.
It happened to my 1st Toshiba, the one that just now created the disks go figure.

At this point all is well. Created another user on the second laptop (admin) and created a clean retore point on Both laptops.

On a Toshiba if you shut down your computer completely then hold "0" (zero), Then Turn on the PC while holding "0" you will boot into the Toshiba recovery environment. From there can can restore from the factory image.

On some Toshiba laptops you actually have to hold shift then click restart while holding shift. then Click on Troubleshoot > Advanced > Toshiba System Recovery
