hi there,
i have created a custom install.wim of win 8.1 pro using windows pe usb drive and sysprep generalise option. when i run my new setup and enter key it says "this key doesn't work with this edition of windows. try a different key". But i have tried all edition generic keys but none work. I also tried creating a ei.cfg file, but then it says "setup has failed to validate the product key".
Please tell me how to fix this. (sorry for bad english)
Thanks in advance............

Hi Himashuk27,

Check whether you are using the correct ISO and possibly use your product key to download the media you need:

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/18309-windows-8-windows-8-1-iso-download-create.html

Is it possible your product key is an upgrade license?

if it is an upgrade license it will not work straight off the bat, this was windows 7 workaround although I do not know if it will work in Windows 8 I have not Tried it:

You need to open a run box and type: "Regedit"

Then located this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Setup/OOBE/

And find the one called "MediaBootInstall".

Double click that and change it from a 1 to a 0.

Then open up cmd as an administrator

Type the command "slmgr /rearm"

You will get a restart your computer messge.

Restart

Then when your computer restarts you need to open a run box again and type "slui.exe 3" and it will allow you to enter your product key and activate :)

Have you tried creating a windows 8 wim ?

If Harry's suggestion doesn't work, the key to this not working may lie in the word "custom." Things added, removed or changed may alter one's ability to use a generic key. Just a thought; however, I'm guessing a non-custom ISO (eg, standard issue) might work just fine but I can't say for sure. Anyway, consider it as food for thought.

Good luck,
