Hi, I have a 256gb ssd installed on my laptop and I recently had installed Ubuntu partition on it and ended up removing it. I have instead reinstalled a fresh copy of Windows 8. However I see no other partition during the installation processing and it's saying I only have 238gb available not my disk's full 256gb. So far I tried chkdsk and disk management and it failed to see any other used space. Thank you in advance for your help.

That would be correct, just checked mine. What your seeing is a difference in how data is measured. I remember my first 1 GB hard drive same thing only 950 MB or what ever. Goggle it if you need an exact technical explanation.

You didn't lose anything. When sizing drives marketing calls 1000 * 1000 * 1000 a GB. But it's really 1024 * 1024 * 1024.

If you multiply 256 times the GB made from 1000 cubed and divide it by 1024 cubed, you get 238.

Is there a reason for the unaccounted for 18gb of space? Because during the Ubuntu installation I allocated 19gb to Ubuntu. Also, let me clarify, it says 238gb without any windows installation on it. It was freshly formatted. I believe the Ubuntu partion is there on there I just cant seem to see it.

Edit: Also only other thing using the ssd is a recovery partition which is 350MB

I guess I didn't drive the point home. Maybe this link will help:

The coincidence that you gave Ubuntu about that much space threw you I think. I wish they'd call a GB a GB and avoid confusion though. :)

The Linux distros I've tried use "GiB", instead of "GB", to differentiate between the different size measurements (computer vs marketing).

SSDs are actually larger than advertised up to 20% but you can't see that, it's reserved for internal use of the disk (load leveling etc.)

They should just say "Billibytes" for billions of bytes. Doesn't seem to work as well for millions of bytes though. :)
