What are the effects of bad sectors on installations

  1. #31

I'm away from home right now, so I'll probably try to do everything in about ten hours or so.

The computer shut down as usual this morning before I left. Hopefully it won't take 20 minutes for my system to start running when I get home. Do crashes cause this kind of problem if the BIOS and drivers are not updated?

If there were errors, the regular Windows check didn't find it (the new Windows 8 error checking tool), and I don't know if chkdsk has found anything because I can't get into the event log. Like I said though, it's a new hard drive that I just bought last year. Can it corrupt that quickly?

What I also know is that a ton of other people have had the same problems as me. I was just looking on the Microsoft forum today, and many other people have recently posted with the exact same complaints concerning Windows Update and crashes. So it could be a Windows Update thing.
Yes hard drive can defect fairly quickly, my last build used 2 WD Black 1TB hard drives, I RMA several before finally getting two that have lasted since 2009.
Its been my experience over the years when sectors start to go the HD is finished best to get your data off it and RMA it if its in warranty

Looking at the chkdsk results, however (if I'm reading it right from the event logs I attached), there don't seem to be any problems with the hard drive. I must say that kind of surprised me.

    The fun just continues

Well, guys, the fun just continues. I can't even get my drivers installed because my system is massively slow, and I'm getting zip files (for my driver files that I downloaded) freezing my system when I try to open them. I tried to refresh (the whole windows system, that is), and the dang computer couldn't refresh (what else is new?).

Here is the latest log files as I continue to try to slog through. I may end up reinstalling (at least attempting to) again.

Looking at the update BIOS instructions, it says,

Unzip and save all files to the same directory of any storage location accessible by the host system.

What does it mean, the "same directory of any storage location accessible by the host system?" Is the desktop okay? Does it have to be in the Windows directory?

It's just their way of saying "extract and run." Desktop is fine.

    Everything's done

And just for kicks, my computer decided to throw in one more blue screen of death. This time, a bad pool header, whatever that means.

Anyway, here's the latest of the files. Anything else I should do? Any advice before I take the plunge and try a Windows update?

I will say that at least my computer is now starting up and shutting down okay. Maybe it really is okay?

Did you run the manufacturers diagnostic utility on your hard drive? With all the issues your having you either have a hardware problem or corrupted install media.

Yes. We need to check on CPU and RAM settings.

    Please download and run CPU-Z.

Take a screenshot of the first tab, one of the memory tab and then a screenshot for each stick of ram that you have of the SPD tab.

When you take the screenshot of the first tab, try to do it while the cpu use is high and the cpu is under load. Run a game or something like a video encoder in the background.

Post the screenshots to a new post, please.

Also - uninstall Intel Smart Connect software. <<< Important
