I got Windows 8 from Uni as a free download for every student. Today I updated to 8.1 hoping to be able to a clean install as my PC is getting a bit clogged. Is there a way that I can do a clean install with out having a disc or the original download of 8 (have the download for 8.1 obviously) I don't have the key still either can I get it through the system?

Thanks for any help, it will be very much appreciated.

The 8.1 update is quasi a new install. It should have reset your system. I have not yet seen a free Windows 8 download.

The key is in the BIOS. It will automatically activate. But if that is an older system, you need the key you got from your university initially. Maybe you can find an installation disc from a friend.

What is your definition of a clean install? Mine is wiping the existing Windows install and doing a fresh install on a blank empty partition. That cannot be done without install media. Doing a reset as WHS posted will get you as close as possible to that. Backup any files you don't want to lose beforehand. If you upgraded from 8.0 to 8.1 the key you find will likely be the 8.0 key. http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/27129-product-key-find-windows-8-a.html There is also this for getting media. http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/18309-windows-8-windows-8-1-iso-download-create.html?filter
