You could try the utility I posted -and/or- go through your bios settings.

You have to specify for it to boot from USB first in order, and in many cases, set an option or two to even allow the machine to boot from USB or external media, at all. Check settings again.

No, that's not wrong. I suspect you just didn't make a good USB key.

This seems good to make an .iso on the hard drive of the 8.1 DVD: ISO Maker - How can I make an ISO image file from CD/DVD with WinISO?

So do that.

Then run the Windows 7 Utility above to backup that .iso you just made to the USB key.

Boot the machine you want to install to with the USB key inserted and boot to USB. (Try using a 2.0 port instead of 3.0 if it doesn't go.)

I just installed from an 8.1 Retail DVD to a clean drive and had no problems.

This looks like a newer machine and I notice you have a Nvidia Graphics card. Are you trying to install with the Windows 8 secure boot in place?
