Hi, i have a Lenovo Ideapad Z585 running Windows 8, secure boot, gpt paritioning and UEFI bios.
The laptop comes with a factory shipped 1TB Sata drive which i want to replace with a Kingston V300 SDD 120GB drive.

I have followed this guide How to Migrate OS to new Hard disk.Ive run this in another desktop, it completes and i shut down, remove the destination and insert it into the laptop - power up and it blue screens with There has been an unexpected error message. Trying to access the recovery partition says it is damaged but looks like its almost going to load. Looking at the drive in EaseUS paritition master the paritions look a perfect copy apart from the proportional sizing.

AHCI is enabled in bios - i've tried EaseUS Backup clone, task was successfull but again blue screens but this time with a attached device cant be found.

One thing i wasnt sure about, the PC i done the cloning in has a RAID stripe setup but not sure if this effects it.
Any one had success in cloning a GPT drive over to a SSD? Am i missing something
I cant do a fresh installation of windows 8 as i dont have recovery discs, nor does the onekey recovery software allow me to do so and id like to keep the recovery parition in tact really.

Any help much appreciated! :)

Have you made the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Disks?

information   Information

We always assume you have made your Recovery Disks using the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Media Creator app the first day you had your new PC.
& made the Startup Repair CD. (Windows 8 only)

I would recommend you making the OEM manufacturer's Recovery DVD's or USB drive.

You can order the Microsoft official OEM Recovery disks from the OEM manufacturer's website.
You can Order Lenovo Recovery Disks from here:

From the manual for Lenovo G480.

Lenovo said:
When the hard disk drive or solid state drive is replaced because of a failure, no
product recovery program is on the new drive. In this case, you must use the
Recovery Disc Set for the computer. Order the Recovery Disc Set and the drive at
the same time so that you can recover the new drive with the pre-installed
software when they arrive.

Was AHCI enabled for the old drive?

You might try updating the firmware for the new Kingston, if there is one.

Perhaps give Clonezilla a try. It has done wonders for me before.

Before cloning, make sure latest storage drivers are installed.

Ahhh I see OG is here to help and posted nearly same time as me. Of course, see what he can do for ya!

Attach a crash dump if you want so I can have a quick look.

I haven't but I have tried - the recovery software just doesn't have the option to create DVD media, that link you gave just goes to tell me I cant create DVDs but the only way is to a USB Memory device. I already backed up to my external hard drive but then how does one get this onto the new SSD? The usb drive won boot into any recover software - right pain!
I did just try to install the Lenovo solution center but it just launches the one key recovery software with the same limited options, I guess the OS is quite large, that's fine but if they made it so a USB pen could boot into rescue media it would be perfect.
Masterchief, now you mention it - no the host PC i used for cloning was in a RAID status so maybe that's to blame  but could still do with recovery media should the new drive fail - thx

Well one thing I have noticed is that when installing UEFI or cloneing all other hard drives need to be disconnected or for some reason some of the boot information can end up on other drives? Macruim Reflect has worked flawlessly for me on UEFI machines You would use the deploy to different hardware to move your Hard drive to your SSD, Of course you'll have to remove data until it will fit on the SSD also you'll need to Image the complete disk. You won't be able to boot if you try to only clone partitions!!
UEFI Bootable usb thumb drives need to be formatted fat 32

The machine you do the cloning on doesn't matter.

All that matters is if the old hard drive was running under AHCI or not. If not, you need to clone, keep IDE or RAID in bios, boot to Windows on new SSD, change the registry to use AHCI driver, then boot to bios and change that to AHCI.

thanks guys,

Its definently in AHCI mode on the laptop before i put it into the other raid machine to do the clone, so if it doesnt matter on the host PC then i am at a loss why it wont boot afterwards - clonezilla doesnt support if the destination is smaller than the source by the looks of it. If i could create working recovery media dvds or a bootable usb device than i should be sorted but i cant figure out how :(
Will try macrium reflect :) - After i do a clone on the host PC, is it just a case of shutting down and taken the destination drive and putting into the laptop or do i have to do something else to make it bootable? Much appreciated
