I stupidly upgraded from windows 8 to 8.1 thinking I was just accepting a windows update and everything was installed seemingly without any probs.

however, I have been forced to create a Microsoft account during the install process which I did not want and now my computer makes me log in every time I fire it up. How can I get rid of this?

Also, I cannot download or send email at all and if I try to log in to email online I cannot type in the password - in fact I cannot type in a password for anything.

i am not a techie at all and just want my computer back to how it was. I have tried to google to the problem and just ended up more confused.

I using my iPad for this posting and would very much appreciate some simple steps on what to do.

thank you and happy new year.

I did a fresh format and install of Windows 8 64 Bit Pro. Sorry but I couldn't live without a start button so I have installed the Start8 start menu which is great. I try sometimes not to use it but find metro frustrating to find programs as I have many. I will use Metro for apps only and desktop of serious computing.
The idea of the Microsoft account is to make things easier to access services such as Xbox Music, have your email in Mail, syncing settings, and your SkyDrive storage. Of course this has issues, like not letting you create a local account at OOBE.

But nonetheless, easy fix. Open the Settings charm and hit PC Settings. From there, go to Accounts. Then you should see your Microsoft account address and the hyperlink "Disconnect." Hit that, it'll delink your Microsoft Account from Windows and you can make a local account.

As for not letting you type in your password, that is an odd one. You LITERALLY cannot type in a password for anything? Is this just an IE issue or also Firefox issue or chrome?

Thanks for the replies and sorry for the delay in my reply back - I've been on nights!

The password issue - seems to be for everything. I have tried to sign into my gmx email account online - it allows me to type in the email address but when I go over to the password box I cannot type in anything at all. So I went to my bank account and tried that - I cannot enter any password at all - nothing will type.

The keyboard is working as I am using it now - although to get logged back in here I had to ask for a new password then copy/paste it inand reset it.

I have Kaspersky running and also Malware Bytes - and have used them without probs before - and I suspect the windows update has annoyed Kaspersky in some way but I don't know how to progress this.

I am using Internet Explorer 11.

I am also using Thunderbird for email - but currently cannot send or receive any following the update.

I don't have an Xbox nor do I store anything in any clouds as I'm a fairly light userand mainly use the computer for some office type stuff and a bit of surfing the net and shopping!

What is an OOBE?

I have just started to do this but it still wants me to set up another password. Is there a way I can forget all this password stuff and just be able to switch on the computer and use it?

Have now solved the password prob - it was Kaspersky. I have disabled the vitual keyboard and will ask them how to progress this.

Just need to sort the email now. I have posted for help on this in another possibly more suitable thread.

You don't need to type in a password if you don't want one, just leave the password fields blank in PC Settings, it won't ask for one.

Good to know you found your problem and fixed! :thumb:
