There were rumors that Windows 7 was going to be x64 only. I do not think it will be x64-only.

There are still a lot of machines out there that won't run a 64-bit OS.

+1 it wouldnt make sence making a only 64-bit OS, when there still is a lot of computers using 32-bit.

No, I can't imagine it'll be x64 only. As previously stated there's just too many x64 incapable machines out there.

I would think Windows 8 would be 64bit only. MS can only hold people's hands for so long and we are looking at another 3 years until 8 comes out. Seeing as 64bit has been in the consumer market for nearly 8 years, i say in another 3 everyone will have a CPU capable of running 64bit. If not, then I highly doubt any of their components will be able to run Windows 8.

Yeah, that's what I think too. There will still be 32-bit as long as the majority of computers in the house or companies aren't strong enough to hold 64-bits.

I think and hope it will be x64 only. They've already gone that route on Windows Server and several of their server products.

Think back to 8-bit versus 16-bit (well this argument is still going on for embedded devices). It has to be done sometime, the sooner the better in terms of advancement.

In retrospect, it very well may be.

    Server 2008 R2 is x64 only. From http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserv.../en/us/R2.aspx
Windows Server 2008 R2 is the first Windows operating system to be offered for only 64-bit processors. And Windows Server 2008 R2 can now support up to 256 logical processor cores for a single operating system instance, including enhancements in Hyper-V virtual machines which are able to address up to 32 logical cores in a single VM. These improvements not only guarantee more bang for your server hardware buck, but also offer better reliability with fewer locks and greater parallelism.
Thus, I can easily foresee the desktop OS going 64bit only.

After all, M$ dropped 16 bit support last year, didn't they
