Solved Install windows 8.1 update

hi, i had windows 7 installed when i purchased my pc, it has 2 drives, 1 ssd and 1 normal hdd, the os is on the ssd and the user folder is on the other, i upgraded to windows 8 and everything is fine except now i would like to update to windows 8.1, i can't update to 8.1 apparently because of my setup, what's the easiest way to update

Hello Paul, and welcome to Eight Forums.

You will need to move your user folder back to the Windows drive (C: ) first.

Afterwards, you should be able to update to 8.1.
After you have finished updating, you can move the user folder to where you like again.

hi, i can't move my user folder as it's too big too fit on my ssd

Depending on the content, are you able to leave the non essential files (ex: music, documents, etc...) themselves on the other drive in another folder to be able to restore your user folder back to C: ?

This way after the update to 8.1, you could just simply copy the files back after moving the user folder again.

If you updated to 8.1 without moving the user folder back, you would essentially be starting over with a new user profile. The folder you have on the other drive and it's contents will still be there, but just no longer associated with a user account.

music
videos
documents
photos

You would still need to move those folders with your user profile, but you would move the contents of those folders to another location first so that they are not as large when moving the folder back to C:.

You can copy and paste the contents to another location before moving the user folder, but you will not be able to just copy and paste the the actual user folder back to C: .

What method did you use to move the user folder originally? You would need to use the same method, but in reverse to move it back to C: .

That's an odd setup to have out of the box. Was this a new or used PC you purchased this way? What brand and model number is your PC?

What did it say when you tried to upgrade to 8.1?

it was new purchased from a company called scan computers, i can't remember what it said when it failed it was a couple of weeks ago i tried

If you like, go ahead and try the upgrade to 8.1 again to see what the exact error message is to get a better idea of what options you may have.

Before doing so, it would be a good idea to back up anything that you do not want to lost to another location than C: to be safe.

The main thing I'm trying to determine is that if it will not let you do the upgrade because of that, or that it's just a warning letting you know that it will not be included in the upgrade.

It just depends on what the error said for which.

Well, other than moving the profile back, you could also create a new administrator user account to use instead that will be on C:.

Afterwards, copy the contents of the old accounts user folder into a new folder on the other hard drive as a backup.

While signed in to your new user account, delete the old account. You should then be able to update to 8.1.

When 8.1 is all setup, you can add folders to a library with the contents of the backed up content from the old account.

• Create a new folder at any location you want.
• Move any files (content from old account user folders) you want into the new folder.
• Include the new folder into a library of your choice.
• If you like, you can also set the new folder to be the default "save" to location for the library as well.

Resetting Windows 8 would have you create a new account and remove the old one. If you do that, be sure to back up the contents of the old account's user folder to a new folder first to help make sure that you don't lose anything in there that you don't want to lose.

if i move my docs ect. to a new folder on the d drive, will that keep them safe

Yes, a simple copy and paste into a new folder will serve as a backup.
