Hey kinda in a pretty bad situation right now.

about a week or 2 ago I downloaded the windows 8.1 update for my Samsung Series 7 chronos model NP700Z5C-S02UB I never installed the update after I downloaded it though. During the last week I notices the mute led on my keyboad wasn't lighting up and then tonight I realized the Fn brightness controls weren't working si i went to restart my laptop. When I did that I guess Win 8.1 decided to finish its installation after I had forgotten about it and now my laptop starts to boot shows the samsung logo screen for 2-3 seconds then automatically restarts. I can access the BIOS menu but I can't seem to get to the safe mode menu by pressing F8/ Ctrl+F8 or any combination of that. I was trying to do some searching and i'm seeing that I need to download and update some drivers to fix my issue. My laptop has the NVIDIA GT640M graphics card on it

Any help is greatly appreciated. I have too much important stuff on the laptop to go back to my last backup.:(

Error 0xC1900101 – 0x40017 when installing Windows 8.1

Hello,

We understand that many customers are receiving error 0xC1900101 – 0x40017 when installing Windows 8.1. This error is typically caused by an incompatible driver.

If you are receiving this error:
1.
First, please double-check the error code. There are many variations of error 0xC1900101, each with a different location code -- the error extension, located after the dash. The information in this thread is intended only for location code 0x40017. If you are receiving a different location code, these steps are unlikely to resolve your issue.

2.
Check that you’ve already updated all of your drivers. In particular, if you have an NVIDIA GeForce graphics card, make sure you’ve installed the latest Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

3.
Check that you do not have any Frequently Asked Questions - What devices are supported by the SteelSeries Engine? that support the SteelSeries Engine installed on your PC. The SteelSeries Engine software is currently not supported on Windows 8.1. Please uninstall the software before attempting to update to Windows 8.1

I dont get any error codes and I am unable to access the secure boot or safe mode
on startup. It shuts down and initiates a restart too. the only thing I can do from preventing it from restarting automatically is press f2 as soon as it starts.

Windows 8.1 - after installation, stuck on restart. - Microsoft Community

This is my issue as well. I have a Recovery disk but it will not boot from it or give me the option to. The only other PC i have is running WinXP SP1 so i cannot create the right disk or USB drive with it.

I just got my recovery disk to boot the pc. I don't know how exactly i was just mashing keys. It wasn't doing anything last night but today it decided to work. It took me to a backup/restore mode. It looks like it is Samsung's restore mode and not Windows. but I am making a backup of my C drive right now. Hopefully I can go back to Win8 or get the proper driver upgrades after this.

Was able to restore and reboot back into windows 8. I'm just going to leave the pc running and make some more backups of stuff before i update all those drivers and try the 8.1 update again. those threads will probably be useful now that i got the pc running on its own again.

also before i figured out how i was able to get the recovery cd to boot. i did it again while holding down f4 during its auto restart loop. then i plugged in my external drive and made a copy of my C drive before doing a recovery. I was able to restore to today's date even though it was after the issue was occurring.

If you can get to the log in screen in Win 8/8.1 there is a power icon in the bottom right hand side. Click the power icon & you should get 3 options. Press & hold the shift key & click on restart. Continue to hold the shift key down until an options screen pops up withe several options. Just click restart, once your system reboots it will come up with 9 options. Use your "F5" to select enable Safe Mode with Networking & the system will restart again & pull up in Safe mode. Hope this will help!!!
