    Disable automatic driver installation?

    Hi everyone,
Anyone know if there's a way to stop the 8.1 upgrader from automatically installing (graphics) drivers as it sets up? I have an Acer AS4820TG with switchable Intel HD and Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics, and I'm 99% sure that drivers for one of these are causing a problem with installing 8.1 Pro. The screen turns black after the second restart, when Windows is "Getting devices ready". After this point it stays black.. no input of any sort affects it. I tried waiting it out for a while, and eventually I just did a hard shut down, at which point Windows reverted to 8. I'm hoping that if I can get it to install without the drivers, I can manually install them from the desktop. If you need more info, let me know.. new here. Thanks in advance!

I tried to be clear about this in my post... this issue is happening while Windows makes system changes DURING the upgrade to 8.1. I am aware of how to change automatic driver installation once I have access to the desktop, as in the thread you linked, but the issue is that during 8.1's installation it seems to be attempting to install the graphics drivers, and thereby blanking my screen and preventing me from completing installation. I'm looking for a way to stop driver installation during the upgrade (I'd understand if it isn't possible). Hopefully I'm clearer this time haha. Nonetheless I appreciate your answering so quickly. Thanks.

EDIT: Next thing I'm going to try is installing different drivers before doing the upgrade... does anyone know for sure where Windows gets the drivers it tries to install during the upgrade?

Still don't know what to do about this... I tried uninstalling all my graphics drivers and than doing the update. 8.1 still tried to install new ones while updating, and I can't do a thing to stop it. Does anyone know what I can do?

We understand that many customers are receiving error 0xC1900101 – 0x40017 when installing Windows 8.1. This error is typically caused by an incompatible driver.

If you are receiving this error:
First, please double-check the error code. There are many variations of error 0xC1900101, each with a different location code -- the error extension, located after the dash.
