Sorry, but Windows cannot be installed to an external/portable drive. It needs to be installed on an internal HDD. :(

actually, i think that windows systems can be installed to external usb HDD. by installing the hdd in to your computer, installing windows in to it, and then pack it back to it's cover. Usually external hdd's are PnP devices, so no driver is needed. Then just boot your system from the external hard drive.

Correct. My Win8 was installed on an external disk attached via eSata. Just make sure you disconnect the internal disk during the installation so that you do not get a double boot and have to keep the external attached all the time. You can then set the boot order as 1. Optical drive, 2. External drive, 3. Internal OS drive. That way it boots into Win8 when the external is attached and into Win7 when the external is detached. My enclosure has a switch, so it is easy to switch it off.

If you do not have an eSata port, get a PCI card (or an Express card for a laptop) and an eSata enclosure. The 2 items together sell for less than $50.
