Solved From 8.0 not Pro to 8.1 Pro

This system came with Windows 8 (not Pro). Did I read somewhere that the (not Pro) version is called Core? I went to the Microsoft Store and updated to Windows 8.1 (not Pro, of course).

I've encountered some issues with the computer, so I want to use the recovery disks I created and roll back to a clean factory installation. Then I want to put Windows 8.1 Pro onto the system, bypassing Windows 8.1 (not Pro). I know I need a Windows 8 Pro DVD and product key, which I have.

I don't know whether the issues I've encountered are self-inflicted or if software did it. Yesterday, I installed both the Avery Wizard for labels and OmniPage 18 Ultimate that includes PaperPort 14 and PDF Create 8. So, it's a tossup as to whether it was me, Avery or Nuance. At any rate, when I open Microsoft Word 2010, I get:

Opening Word 2010.PNG

When I started having issues of PaperPort not loading when it should, I restored to before I installed Avery Wizard and OmniPage and that's when the Word error message started.

I'm also getting some type of error on shutting down that stays on the screen all of 1/2 a second and I don't get a chance to read it.

Although the system's running OK, I don't like those errors and I'm not so far into this system that it will be a huge inconvenience to reinstall my stuff. I may just go ahead and install Office 2013 instead of 2010, just to see if the kinks have been worked out of it.

So, do I have it right? I don't like second guessing myself, and certainly don't like to make things harder, so if my plans are incorrect, please let me know.

Thanks in advance . . .

OK, since I see a lot of youse guys :))) are online and haven't answered, I'm going to take it I have things right on a recovery? I'm gonna give it a couple more hours and if no one tells me I'm doing it all wrong, I'm gonna jump outta da frying pan and into da fire!

:dinesh:

Although I've done many, many clean installations in my time, this will be my first recovery (except for that danged Toshiba laptop I took back because it kept crashing) and that wasn't as elaborate as Windows 8.

You can upgrade to Pro from 8 or 8.1 using the upgrade link (Get more features with a new edition of Windows) found at Control Panel->System and Security->System.

Right, but I gots issues I don't know how to solve, and since I'm not that far into Windows 8 on this new machine, why not? I love to 'speriment. Besides the availability of bitlocker is an incentive. Although I'm retired, I do some highly sensitive work for my subdivision (unpaid, of course) and to be able to "lock it up and throw away the key" so to speak is something I need and want.

I'm not sure why you wish to upgrade to Pro? Are you thinking that upgrading to Pro will fix the software compatibility issues you are encountering? If a piece of software won't run in "Core" then it won't run in Pro either.

As I said, I don't know if the issues were self-inflicted or if Avery or Omni caused them. If I had my guess, I think it was a combination of self-infliction and Avery, since Avery resides in MS Office and I had no issues with Word until I restored to before Avery. I'm not accusing Avery, but well, y'know . . . smells like a skunk, might be a skunk . . . So, no, I won't reinstall Avery Wizard, but I will reinstall OmniPage Ultimate, because Nuance guarantees it compatible.

Pro adds some additional features such as ability to join a domain, bit-locker encryption, Hyper-V, etc... but the OS itself is identical.

Yup, and I could prolly get third party apps to replace what I need, such as join a domain and bitlocker, but other than that, I'm not even sure what most of them are. When we tested Hyper-V in an OS beta for Microsoft, my system wasn't capable, so I missed learning about that, and I'm not sure I need it anyway.

It looks like Media Center came with the computer, so at least I don't have to upgrade to that. However, I don't watch TV on my computer and don't know why I would.

Whoops! Recovery didn't work through the computer, and when I tried it with the Recovery disks, I got to 57% and then got told:

Recovery Manager could not restore your computer using the factory image. Please contact HP Support. Error Code: 0xe0ef000e

Then it tried to reboot, but got to Checking Media Presence . . .
Media Present . . .
Start PXE over IPv6

I tried Recovery Manager a second time and got exactly the same thing.

Ohhhhhhhhh Crappppppppppp!

Going to Plan B, I guess and try an install of 8.1 Pro since it seems my system is hosed. I would try to repair it, but I don't have an 8.1 not Pro DVD.

So, it looks like I'm gonna go out there flying by the seat of me pants once more . . .

I'm going to try one more time. I left the Ethernet cable attached, so this time I removed it. If that makes no difference, I'll go ahead and bite the bullet by clean installing 8.1 Pro. Do I have a choice in the matter?

Well, it's hosed. I even changed out the hard drive and I'm still told my computer needs to be repaired. I know that, and that's what I'm trying to do, but so far, I'm not allowed.

Well, theog, I did in fact jump from the frying pan into the fire. And, the final chapter has been written.

1. The computer, bought on August 19 is still in warranty.
2. I opened a chat session with HP's Techs. It's so much easier to talk with someone without the language barrier. I'm sure they have as much of a language barrier as I do, so as I said, chat is easier.
3. The first one I spoke to was very nice; so was the second one after the chat screen froze and I had to go back in
4. By the time I got to the techs, though, the bios could not see my hard drive or my DVD drive.
5. After "reseating" my hard drive and my DVD drive, Windows still wouldn't boot.
6. A service order was initiated to return the computer to HP for repair. Most likely it will come back at the factory default. Duh! I'm quite sure the Recovery Manager wiped the hard drive clean!
7. I'll receive a box from Fedex or UPS in two to three business days. Repair will take 7 to 9 days, and return will probably take a couple or three more days. So, a couple of weeks and I'll get my 'puter back if I'm lucky.
8. Cost will be $.00 since I'm in Warranty until October 2014.

I've not bought a desktop since at least 1990, and the first one I do buy crashes on me. I have never had a crash that couldn't be fixed on my self-built computers, but this one ate my lunch! If the recovery disks had worked, everything would have been fine, but they didn't . . .

Just a FYI, MS Office 2010 has built in labels from a bunch of vendors including Avery so no need for the Avery wizard. Open Word, Mailings, Labels and select Options.

the above is an indication that no OS is seen by the bios; it DOESNOT mean the hdd is non-serviceable; and what it tried is probably to connect to the net to get the boot files?

Thanks for the info. Hopefully, I won't need it again. I'm still stumped over why Recovery wouldn't work.

Yes, thankfully, the packaging for the computer should be here today and she'll prolly be on her way to the computer hospital tomorrow.
