I dont think the problem is the cpu type, but anyway cant you try it on a non-xeon rig just to have sure?
Unfortunately the only machines I have are all dual-Xeon. At this point I only have one dual x5482 machine and the rest are all dual w5580 or x5680 CPUs - not a bad thing in my eyes... Just frustrating to have no install alternatives.

I am having the exact same issues. My work received a Dell Latitude ST tablet with Windows 7 on it. After trying to install Windows 8 x86 from both a DVD (created using the Windows 7 USB DVD tool) I get the original driver error. This is using an external DVD rom since the tablet doesn't have one built in obviously. I have re-downloaded the file multiple times and I still get the same error.

I used a 16GB flash drive and created a bootable image using the Windows 7 USB DVD tool and I still get the load driver error. I have downloaded all drivers from Dell's website and placed them on the thumb drive, then browsed to each folder one at a time to see if any of the drivers will work. Apparently the driver it wants isn't something Dell offers.

At this stage, after screwing with this thing for 6 hours yesterday we are prepared to just send it back to Dell and swear off Windows tablets all together. It's a shame since we are primarily a "Windows shop."

After 3 weeks of asking on the Dell community forums I've gotten a private message from a forum moderator or dell engineer - not sure which. He says he has forwarded my info along to someone and they will be in touch soon (this is as of 1/3/2012 @ 18:00 EST). Sorry to not be of any more help but I just have a screen name on dell community forums at this point. PM me if you want or I'll post on here if there is anything I can find out - I'm going to ask about getting them to post a full set of known working drivers on ftp.dell.com for all current products. no idea if they will do it - but maybe...

I got it working on an Optiplex 390 (Core i5) rig at my old work (I was fired, not because of that )
