No Windows 8.1 in Store

:mad: This has been a long and frustrating process for me, so please forgive me if I end up on a rant. :mad:

Here's the whole story:

On my desktop, which I purchased pre-loaded with Windows 8 almost a year ago, I have been unable to see Windows 8.1 update in the store. So I consulted the support website, made sure I had all the recent updates, made sure everything was in order, and (not) to my surprise - it still wasn't there. I checked all over the internet to find a solution, but there was none, so I decided to visit the store I purchased my computer. I talked to the tech there, he suggested that I do a complete reset of Windows 8 (I have a disc from some problems I had several months ago) and I listened (damn tech). Lo and behold - after resetting my computer, downloading all updates, rebooting my computer, running Windows 8.1 Upgrade Assistant (which told me everything is compatible), the update still isn't there. Now my next logical step is to drive 45 minutes to the nearest Microsoft Store, and hopefully they can help me out, but I figured I should check here first.

So I'm honestly at a loss of what I can do, and the community here was very helpful last time I had a problem, so I'm coming back to you guys. Is there anything I can do to make this update appear in the store? Or am I SOL?

Edit: Thanks for moving this!

And if you find it listed in your updates, delete it and download it again then do a reboot. I had the same situation.

Ok so I just did a check, and I do not have this update installed. However, Windows Update consistently finds no updates, is there another way to download this update?

I found a place to download that update (KB2871389) off the internet, but when I attempt to download it, it says the update is unavailable on my computer. So, I have come to the conclusion that unless I can get a free product code from MS, I am screwed.

If you have Windows 8 installed you have a Product key.

Isn't there any way to contact Microsoft about this and get them to help?

theog - How can I find out what my product key is, and will it work with activating Windows 8.1 as well?

Ztruker - I spent an hour on the phone with support yesterday, and they checked for all the things I told them already isn't working, then kept redirecting me with no help, I'm going to call an actual store today and see if I can take it in. I'll let you know how that goes.

Key will be in the box or in the Store email.

@frustrated user
the download is available in the Microsoft download section; see
Download details: Update for Windows 8 (KB2871389) - Microsoft Download Center
this will give the msu file which on clicking will install the upload;

however, my experience is that 1) download and install the update; 2) flush the store cache; 3) restart the machine; 4) now click the store; it will take some time to rebuild the cache and then you will have the free-update (provided it was not a volume licence from the laptop manufacture or the enterprise edition)
once you get to see the download please check the issue as solved

Therein lies the problem though. Upon an attempt at downloading KB2871389, an error message pops up stating "This update is not applicable on your computer", so I'm basically stuck. I have made sure I was installing the correct version of it, and tried all other versions just to be on the safe side - none worked. The only microsoft store I have within an hour of where I live also doesn't do tech support, so it looks like I'm out of luck again.

(I mentioned Microsoft windows web store)

I see from your pc details that yours is windows 8 pro; but, is it retail version or volume licensed?
my understanding is , if it is a Volume license, then the update has to be through an iso; (probably later through the OEM or if you are a member of TechNet or MSDN, you can get a link for the iso)

the second option for VL and enterprise versions are: downloading through the webinstaller; http://www.eightforums.com/installation-setup/33164-how-download-windows-8-1-iso.html

best of luck;

Sorry about the confusion with Windows 8 Pro, I believe I only have Windows 8, but I made this account soon after I got my computer and was unclear on the differences. I have an ISO for Windows 8.1 downloaded, but I can't install it without a valid product key. Would you know where I could find such a product key? I do not have a box or a store email as theog suggested.

Sorry, I don't think I quite understand what you're saying. I downloaded ProduKey, and it gave me my product key for Windows 8. When I try it with the 8.1 ISO file I get a message saying "This product key didn't work. Check it and try again.", and when I use any of the product keys you provided it checks out, but then tells me to check my internet connection. Am I missing something?
