Hi All
I have installed W8 Pro on C: with wiping windows 8 standard.
During the process it never asked for an install key and what I ended up with is seen here below. What have I done wrong?

My Computer

Is this a OEM manufacturer's PC with Pre-installed Windows 8?

Which Windows 8 Pro are you using?

Yes it is a new ASUS laptop which had standard W 8-64.
Just bought a W 8 -64 Pro DVD yesterday. On the DVD it says 'intended for distribution with a new PC'.
Would it help with changing the key to this new DVD key?

My Computer

I did install with the W 8 Pro DVD and and wiped C:.
Using the new dvd key wont work. So do I need to restore from the restore partition and just enter the new dvd key?

If you managed to do clean install with the Pro dvd, try entering the Pro key like this:
Admin command:

slmgr /ipk xxxx-xxxx-xxxx etc

paste your pro key where the xxxx are

I did run cmd as admin, typed in the slmgr /ipk followed by the new key?
That's what I get.

Maybe the pro pack key is different. No idea why MS is making this so difficult and aggravating for their customers. Not a good way to keep them.

I Have just rang MS(not a friendly person at all) and what he told me is that I cannot get the Pro version the way I did it(see above).
It would've had to be a Windows 8 Pro pack DVD. He also told me that the supplier should've known this as I bought the pro from the same shop.
Tedious to say the least:confused:

This sounds like a backup DVD rather than a DVD designed to upgrade Windows to a different edition.

If you have a core key in the motherboard, it will reinstall the core version.
If you'd had a Pro key in the motherboard, I believe the same DVD would reinstall the Pro version.

I think you need to buy the Pro Pack which theog mentioned to change to the Pro edition.

Not sure why he bought that, then. From memory the 8.0 oem/systembuilder thing is fine for anyone to use.

Tho I notice they still have some of these hanging around after all this time, Tesco have finally run out, but there are still plenty elsewhere

I just wanted to install 8Pro and bought a Pro version. Of course, I did not research it enough. The shop owner maybe could've made me aware off as he knew I just bought the laptop.
Painful lesson with heaps of time wasted.

Yes I did try that, no joy.
I'm sure you also read my previous posts. It could be that I mucked it up by clean installing with the Pro DVD?
The MS helpdesk though told me I got the wrong DVD?? :-(

You are using a Windows 8 Upgrade key, also you have updated to Windows 8.1.

So, do/should I reinstall(wipe C )with the windows 8 Pro DVD? I think my original(Windows 8 standard) recovery partition has also changed since I did the Pro install on C:. The used space on the partition looks larger.
It seems that I'm stuck in no-mans land:(

If you have the FULL Retail Windows 8 Pro, reinstall Windows 8 Core, than upgrade to the FULL Retail Windows 8 Pro using ADD FEATURES. Than upgrade to Windows 8.1.

The above will not work with a Upgrade Windows 8 Pro.

He doesn't have the upgrade.

The picture he posted is full oem media with license.

That should be fine for a clean reinstall, as I recall it is fine for anybody to use the oem/systembuilder with win 8.0.

With the release of Windows 8, Microsoft is offering a simple upgrade license for retail—a departure from the Windows 7 Retail License. The System Builder License is still the license used to preinstall Windows 8 on new PCs that you sell. The System Builder License also has a new usage right, the Personal Use License.
