    Windows 8.1 install problems

Hello everyone, I need some IT guys help with problem i faced recently.
Then trying to upgrade from win 8 x64 to 8.1 x64, it says that my cpu does not meet minimum requirement, or says that it does not support compareexchange128.
My CPU is Intel quad core q9400. MB intel dp35dp.
The most funny part is that my cpu supports PAE, NX, SSE2, CMPXCHG16b, PrefetchW, and LAHF/SAHF.
I really don`t know what to do, or where the problem roots are...

I've not heard of this happening before so an absolute stab in the dark - have you tried resetting to defaults or updating your bios?

I have tried resetting bios settings to default, but it hasn`t helped.
Because of the Intel, i can`t update my bios, last update they published was in ~2009.
This is ridiculous that microsoft programmers failed so hard...

Hello, Typexs. Welcome to Windows EightForums.

It seems it may not be your CPU, but rather your MB: 8.1 upgrade with not so old hardware...is a no go

The kicker is that the author links your OP here within the article in the sentance "or for this other Windows 8 user with an Intel DP35DP"!

You may have this solved already, but if not, I have the same problem; "does not support compareexchange128".

My system is dual boot, so I had to jump through a couple of hoops, but if yours isn't, maybe it'll be easier for you.

I formatted the hard drive, reinstalled Windows 8 32 bit, went to Windows Update and searched for updates and installed, then searched again . . . until no more updates were available. I then went to the store and Windows 8.1 32 bit was offered. Nine hours later, I was updated.

I don't know what compareexchange128 is, but whatever it is, Microsoft blew it! The specs should not have been changed when updating. I can imagine that a whole lot of folks had the same problem we have/had or similar.

Hi, I had Windows 8.1 on my system DP35DP + E6750 , after changing CPU to E8400, system refused to boot.
Reason - CPU does not support Non-execute memory proterction, does not support Virtualization, etc.

After many hours of investigation, i finally tried to re-flash latest version of BIOS ( which already was installed ) - and after re-flashing system correctly recognized all available features of new CPU - and Windows 8.1 x64 boots ok now. So may be all that you need is to re-flash BIOS with new CPU installed.

    Welcome to Windows EightForums, dshvedchenko.

    Thanks for posting your fix.

Wonder why that would work, though, since it’s the same BIOS version.
