Windows 8.1 upgrade restarts download at 50%

I have successfully upgraded 2 Windows 8 pro media centre PC's, a desk top and a netbook, but the 3rd, gets stuck in a continuous loop.

After initiating the upgrade from the store, the download bar slowly works its way up to 50%, the installation process starts, and as soon as it gets to "getting your PC ready" the download process starts again from scratch. This is a very common problem, but Microsoft are still silent on the issue.

It is bad enough that I have to download the file 3 times, rather than just download one ISO, but this one download has now happened at least a dozen times.

All Windows 8 updates had been done and I have cleared the Windows Store cache.

The setuperr file gives

I have the same problem. The download from the store continuously restarts at 50% load. It is also difficult to cancel. I have had to kill the app. I stupidly left the download to run while I went out and the download cycling continued for so long that I have blown my monthly 40GB broadband usage limit in a day. I now have a excess usage charge of 75 UKP for my 'monthly' usage of 115GB! Thank you Microsoft for the 'free' update.

I have the exact problem as both of you. I have been in a complete loop for 3 days now and have not found a way to kill the process. Please see my original thread. I thought I was the only one with this specific problem but now I know other people are experiencing the same.

How do I kill the download?

That I have found out how to do. Right click on the bar showing the download progess, and select cancel to stop the download.

I hope my unlimited broadband is really unlimited, as I must have used 40 GB myself trying to get the upgrade to install. I left the PC on overnight because it seemed to be slow. It was only the next morning when I discovered that it was continuously starting again.

I think Microsoft are going to get a lot of complaints about this, as it is a common issue. Whoever decided to make the download delete itself each time has a lot of explaining to do.

I noticed last night that the netbook I was using (one of the two PC's that I have successfully upgraded) contains 2.6 GB files that relate to the download and installation of the Windows 8.1 upgrade (same size as the download and same date). The PC that fails and restarts downloading has none of these files, and I have never seen any of these files being created while it is downloading. Now my broadband account tells me that I made 35 GB of downloads on 17th to 18th October, so the files are downloading, but are either not being saved, or are being deleted. I think the process is restarting because the files that have been downloaded are not there.

I can kill the download process, even close the store app. Otherwise I am in the same situation. I really don't like Windows 8 anyway, and I was hoping 8.1 would improve my opinion of it. But if I cannot even install it...

I will add that I had cancelled the download and reset the store cache this morning, after it repeatedly does the same thing (fortunately my internet is unlimited, even if it is slow). The download simply "started where it had left off" when I went to download it again, as if any temporary installation files were still there?!?. It seems like a definite bug in the system, either mine or Microsoft's.

I would have to believe it is Microsoft's problem since there a several of us experiencing the same problem as you. I'm sure there are many more people with the same problem that haven't reported it. Did you know they found bugs in the RT version and jumped on it and fixed it but there is no mention of fixing our problem.

I have the same issue - done the download and install no problem on one machine, one machine I can't even install Windows 8 on and another where the download gets to 50% then restarts.
My usage which is normally about 40 GB a month was 90 in October (my account month ends on the 25th) and already (on the 27th) it is 28 GB - 27.5 GB today when i left the download to try and download while I went out. That's something like 77.5 GB of attempts for a single 3.5 GB download. Microsoft, this is totally unsatisfactory you need to do something better - e.g. hand in your old Win 8 discs for new 8.1 discs or allow a single download to be used across several machines.
