    0xC1900101 - 0x20017 error while updating?

from 8 pro 64bit (with media centre) to 8.1, tried many times, no luck, always end up getting the same error code 0x20017, then rolled back to 8, every driver has been updated and there no external driver whatsoever, any help, please.

    Hello wgan,

Is your Windows drive encrypted by chance?

If so, you'll need to decrypt it first, then update to 8.1. Afterwards, you could encrypt it again if you like.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

no, it's not, but it is a SSD drive as I've heard this error code happens to some people whose primary drive is a SSD, and of course, I updated everything I could including BIOS and SSD driver.

Yes, I did have the same problem with one of my PC running Windows 8 Pro WMC. Apparently there are a lot of people having the same problem and some have their HD encrypted.

Before I updated to Windows 8.1, I did the followings:
    1. Ran Registry Cleaner
    2. Ran chkdsk
    3. Ran sfc /scannow
    4. Ran Windows Updates
    5. Updated firmware and optimized the SSD.
    6. Updated all drivers
    7. Removed all hidden drivers.
    8. Disabled all the third party software services & Software at startup
    9. Reset BIOS to default since I OC'ed my PC
    10. No anti virus,I only use Windows Defender
    11. No encryption on HD.

With all of the steps above, I still got the same error and the log file did not pinpoint what was the problem.

Since I always back up the original fresh install with activation. I decided to restore the image, ran all Windows Updates and this time it updated to 8.1 successfully.

According to this article, there is a flaw with 8.1 updates and MS is working on it, so you might want to wait for another week then retry.

thanks I'll keep an eye on that thread, however, I've got another problem, since the update has failed for several times, it left quite some files in the system, now it's eaten up nearly 20g of space, I need to know where are those files located to clean them all up.

You may be able to clean them up with Disk Cleanup.
