Just a black screen and a cursor after 8.1 update

Someone please help me. I just installed 8.1 on my Samsung Series 7 Chronos laptop and it's now unusable. All I get after a reboot now is a blank screen and a vanishing cursor. I can't do CTRL+ALT+DEL or any other button combination. I also can't seem to be able to do a system restore as a restore point doesn't seem to exist for some odd reason. I've also tried the boot into low res mode but I get the same result. The only thing that seems to work is booting into Safe Mode with Networking but that doesn't allow me to install/uninstall anything so it's pretty much useless.

Please help! :(

I can't install/uninstall anything. Only way I can get into the laptop is through Safe Mode. Though I did have the latest drivers prior to installing 8.1.

I have the same problem. Samsung series 7 Chronos. I get a black screen and when I move the mouse pointer I can see it but it flickers. when the pointer is still, it disappears until moved again. I am unable to use my computer for anything now. I hope there is a fix very soon!

That sounds like it might be an activation issue, can you Ctrl-Alt-Del and pull up TaskManager? If you can, then run SLMGR.vbs /dlv if it is still in there. There are crack activators that cause this, the only way to fix it is to do an In-Place Install, which you can't do with 8.1 unless you can find an ISO image or Disk.

Try hitting Windows Key + P and a down arrow maybe it is not showing on your main monitor. But I don't think thats the issue, the activation is canned. Use the SMLGR command and see if it is activated- IF you can get to Task Manager.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Just got done emailing my uncle and this is how we got mine to work.

1. Enter Safe mode with networking
2. Go to AMD website and download the newest beta driver released on 10/10/13.
3. Go to your device manger, disable your AMD graphics card.
4. Restart. It'll load in normally.
5. Run the installer.
6. Restart.

Hopefully that'll work for you too. AMD just apparently hasn't updated their mobile drivers for windows 8.1 yet.

Only thing now is the display is kind of dim. Im trying to figure out how to fix that now though.

I haven't tried the Windows+ p key. I will have to try that later. control alt delete doesn't do anything. I have a genuine copy of Windows as the laptop came with Windows 8 when I bought it not too long ago. Hopefully I or anyone with this problem doesn't have to install Windows. I have many family pictures on my laptop that I don't want to lose :(

Okay, to fix the dimness issue I just had to restart it again. So the steps I supplied are what I did to fix the issue. I have a Samsung series 7 Chronos that is now running windows 8.1. :)

Thank you, AtroxAmbitus
! Your steps worked for me. Although, my screen looks a bit fuzzy (not as sharp as it used to be) and the computer seems to be running real slow. I will have to work on that. At least I have a working computer now. Thanks again.

Well, maybe try updating your intel graphics driver as well. I noticed they released a new driver for windows 8.1, and my screen looks amazing again now that I updated.

Ok. I updated the Intel display driver as well. To continue my frustration with this update, the restarts did not bring my display or computer performance back. With that said, I finally tried shutting the computer all the way down instead of restarting it. Shutting it down fixed all of my issues. Now the computer display is bright and crisp, performance is back, and now Windows is at 8.1. Thanks for the help. I would have been scrambling for support if I had not found this forum.

I got mine working as well. For me, the fix was disabling the HD 4000 adapter. Thanks for all the tips guys.

Hello,

Thanks all for the info. I got the exact same problem on the same computer (chronos series 7) but... i can't access safe mode!
I keep smashing the F8 key (tried shift+F8 too) but it just does'nt do anything. I have the samsung logo with the spinner and then comes the black screen with flickering cursor :(

Any idea on why this happens ?

Thank god I found this thread! Having the exact same issue as everyone on the Samsung Series 7 Chronos after Windows 8.1 update and I also cannot boot into safe mode, tried f8, tried shift + f8 but no luck. I just get the samsung logo then a black screen and when I move my trackpad I can see the mouse briefly before it disappears.

Any help would be much appreciated.

As soon as you hit restart, keep the F8 button held down.

rubbish+f8

Hi all. It took me quite a while and many reboots to get into the rubbish + f8 menu. You literally have to press it as fast as you can while constantly holding the shift key. I think once you see the little spinner under the samsung logo, then it is not going to work. Keep trying. I was thinking the same thing (shift+f8 doesnt work) when I was trying it. It finally worked for me though. I hope it works for you all.
